Daemonorops draco is an evergreen climbing producing a cluster of unbranched stems up to 15 metres long. The plant is harvested from the wild for its resin, medicinal uses and to supply material for basket making. This is probably the main species supplying the resin, though several others are also a source of it. *

Frequently Asked Questions about Dragon Blood Extract
What is Dragon's Blood resin (Daemonorops draco) extract?
Dragon's Blood is a bright red plant resin with a long history in trade and craft. Our product comes from Daemonorops draco, a climbing rattan palm of the palm family (Arecaceae) native to Southeast Asia; the red resin coats the surface of its fruit. In traditional Chinese herbalism this resin is called Xue Jie, and in older Latin usage Sanguis Draconis. The part used here is the resin. It is worth knowing that the name "dragon's blood" is shared by red resins from several unrelated plants. Our extract is offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from ethically sourced, wild-harvested raw material. This is a whole-resin liquid extract that carries the resin's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Daemonorops draco resin; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the resin's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Which "dragon's blood" is this, and is it incense or dye?
Both are important questions, because "dragon's blood" is used loosely. First, source: several unrelated plants produce a red resin or sap called dragon's blood. Ours is specifically from Daemonorops draco, a rattan palm. It is not sangre de grado, which comes from the South American tree Croton lechleri, and it is not from the dragon tree (Dracaena, such as the Socotra or Canary Island dragon trees), which are ornamental plants. Second, use: dragon's blood is very widely used as incense, as a red dye or pigment, as a varnish, and in ritual and craft - our product is none of those; it is a herbal liquid extract intended to be taken by the drop, not burned as incense or used as a dye. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Daemonorops draco) and plant part (resin) so there is no confusion with the other sources or with the craft uses.
How do I use Dragon's Blood liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take about 10-15 drops in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. See the safety note below. Drink the entire contents.
Is Dragon's Blood extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Dragon's Blood is not right for everyone. Traditionally it has been used more externally and in craft than taken internally, so for internal use it is sensible to use it under the guidance of a qualified practitioner and not to exceed the suggested serving. Do not use it during pregnancy or while nursing, and it is not for children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Dragon Blood (Daemonorops Draco) Resin is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
