Dong Quai (Angelica Sinensis) is a fragrant perennial of the carrot or parsley family (Apiaceae). The part used here is the root. It is one of the most important and widely used herbs in traditional Chinese herbalism, where it is called Dang Gui; in English it is known as dong quai or Chinese angelica. It is a different plant from the European angelica (Angelica archangelica).

  •

WHOLE-ROOT LIQUID EXTRACT: Made from the dried root of Angelica sinensis, carrying the plant's natural spectrum of constituents rather than an isolated or standardized single compound.

  •

TRADITIONAL ALCOHOL EXTRACTION: A classic alcohol-based tincture, made with organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, and water, for a concentrated extract with a long shelf life.

  •

CHINESE ANGELICA, NOT EUROPEAN: This is Angelica sinensis (dong quai / Dang Gui), distinct from the European angelica (Angelica archangelica) and from Bai Zhi (Angelica dahurica).

  •

THE HERB, NOT THE CONFECTION: A liquid herbal extract of the root - not candied angelica used to decorate cakes.

  •

CLEARLY LABELED: Labeled by botanical name and plant part, so there is no confusion with the European angelica, the other species, or candied angelica.

Angelica sinensis - Dong Quai, Dang Gui

Dong Quai (Angelica sinensis) is among the most storied roots in traditional Chinese herbalism, known there as Dang Gui. Our Dong Quai tincture captures the dried root in a concentrated, alcohol-based liquid extract.

About our Dong Quai Tincture:

We start with quality dong quai root and use a classic, conventional alcohol extraction with organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, and water. It is a whole-root extract - not an isolate - carrying the plant's natural profile. This is specifically Angelica sinensis, the Chinese angelica.

Suggested use: Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to four times a day, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.*

Frequently Asked Questions about Epazote Extract
What is Epazote (Chenopodium ambrosioides)?
Epazote is a pungent, aromatic annual plant native to Mexico and Central America, of the amaranth family (Amaranthaceae). Its botanical name is Chenopodium ambrosioides, and in modern classification it is also placed in the genus Dysphania as Dysphania ambrosioides - the same plant. The part used here is the herb, the leafy aerial parts. Epazote is one of the most important culinary herbs in Mexican cooking, where its bold flavor is used in dishes such as beans, quesadillas, and soups. It is also known by other names including Mexican tea, wormseed, and paico. Our extract is offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-herb liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Chenopodium ambrosioides herb; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the herb's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this the cooking herb, and why two botanical names?
Yes, it is the same plant as the Mexican cooking herb, and the two names refer to one species. Epazote is best known as a kitchen herb in Mexican cuisine; our product is a concentrated liquid herbal extract of that plant rather than the fresh or dried culinary leaf you would cook with. On the names: the plant has long been called Chenopodium ambrosioides, and botanists now also classify it as Dysphania ambrosioides - it is the same epazote either way. It is additionally known as Mexican tea, wormseed, and paico. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Chenopodium ambrosioides) and plant part (herb) so there is no confusion about which plant and which part you are getting.
How do I use Epazote liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and read the important safety note below before use. Drink the entire contents.
Is Epazote extract right for everyone? Important safety information.
Please read this carefully. Epazote is safe in the small amounts used as a seasoning in cooking, but the plant naturally contains a compound called ascaridole that can be harmful if taken in large or concentrated amounts. For that reason, use this extract only as directed and never exceed the suggested serving. Do not use epazote during pregnancy or while nursing, because it can affect the uterus. It is also not recommended for young children, for the elderly, or for anyone who is weak or in poor health. If you have kidney or liver problems, or take any medication, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Stop using it and seek advice if you feel nauseous, dizzy, or unwell. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
