Frequently Asked Questions about Inchplant Extract
What is Inchplant (Tradescantia zebrina) herb extract?
Inchplant is a liquid extract of the dried herb (the above-ground parts) of Tradescantia zebrina, a trailing plant of the Commelinaceae family, commonly grown as a houseplant and known as silver inch plant, wandering dude or zebra plant. You may also see it under the older botanical name Zebrina pendula. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. A couple of points matter for safety: the plant's sap contains calcium oxalate, which can irritate the skin, and it is not well studied for internal use, so it is best kept to short-term use and is not for use in pregnancy. Please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Tradescantia zebrina herb; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The herb inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both.
Is inchplant the same as other "wandering" plants?
It is one of several trailing plants that share nicknames, so the botanical name matters. Ours is Tradescantia zebrina, the silver inch plant (also called wandering dude). It is not the same as Moses-in-the-cradle, which is a different species, Tradescantia spathacea, and it is different again from other trailing Tradescantia such as T. fluminensis and T. pallida. An older common name, "wandering Jew," is now generally replaced by "inch plant" or "wandering dude." We label ours clearly as Tradescantia zebrina so its identity is unambiguous.
How do I use Inchplant liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and keep to short-term use. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Avoid getting the concentrated liquid on your skin. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.
Is Inchplant right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Tradescantia zebrina is grown mainly as an ornamental plant and is not well studied for internal use, so a cautious approach is sensible. Skin and oxalate: the sap contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause skin irritation or an allergic rash on contact - do not apply the concentrated extract to the skin, and wash your hands after handling. Digestive: swallowing large amounts of the plant can cause mild stomach upset such as nausea, vomiting or loose stools, so do not exceed the suggested serving and keep to short-term use. Pregnancy and nursing: do NOT use it during pregnancy, and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not give it to infants or young children. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. Keep out of reach of children.
