Frequently Asked Questions about Kencur Extract
What is Kencur / Sand Ginger (Kaempferia galanga)?
Kencur is the rhizome of Kaempferia galanga, a low-growing member of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae) whose broad leaves lie almost flat against the ground - a distinctive habit that sets it apart from tall gingers. In English it is usually called sand ginger or aromatic ginger; kencur is its Indonesian name, Sha Jiang its name in Chinese herbal tradition, and kacholam, cekur and cutcherry are among its other regional names. The part used is the dried rhizome, which carries a warm, sharply aromatic volatile oil containing ethyl p-methoxycinnamate - simply a component of the raw material. It is a familiar culinary and household plant across Indonesia, Malaysia and India. Our extract is offered in two forms, a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite. This is a whole-rhizome liquid extract, not an isolated compound and not the essential oil, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Kaempferia galanga rhizome; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the rhizome's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is kencur the same as galangal, or as black ginger?
No to both, and the names are genuinely confusing here. First, galangal. Our species name is Kaempferia galanga, but galangal is a different genus altogether - Alpinia. Greater galangal is Alpinia galanga and lesser galangal is Alpinia officinarum, and we sell both separately under their own names. So although the word galanga appears in our botanical name, this plant is not a galangal; if a recipe or a supplier means galangal, they mean an Alpinia. Second, black ginger. That is Kaempferia parviflora, which shares our genus but is a different species with a dark-coloured rhizome; we do not sell it, and this product is not it. There is also a garden name to be aware of: resurrection lily is applied to Kaempferia species grown as ornamentals, which is a different context again. And fingerroot, another plant sometimes met in the same cuisines, is Boesenbergia rotunda - a third genus. We label the botanical name (Kaempferia galanga) and plant part on every page so you can tell exactly which rhizome you are buying.
How do I use Kencur liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Kencur extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Kencur is an everyday culinary and household plant in Southeast Asia, but a concentrated liquid extract is not the same as the spice used in cooking, so do not exceed the suggested serving. People who are sensitive to plants of the ginger family may also react to this rhizome. Do not use this product during pregnancy. If you are nursing, take any medication, or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Kencur (Kaempferia Galanga) Rhizome is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur. and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
