Frequently Asked Questions about Huang Qin Extract
What is skullcap extract used for?
Skullcap extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried root of Scutellaria baicalensis, also known as Baikal skullcap or Chinese skullcap. As a dietary supplement, skullcap extract is used to support a healthy inflammatory response, liver function, and the body's natural defense systems. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
What is the difference between skullcap drops and skullcap tincture?
HawaiiPharm offers skullcap in two liquid formats. The alcohol-free glycerite drops use vegetable glycerin and purified water as solvents, making them suitable for those who avoid alcohol. The skullcap tincture uses grain alcohol as the primary solvent, which is the traditional herbal extraction method. Both are made from the same dried Scutellaria baicalensis root - the choice comes down to personal preference or dietary needs.
What is Huang Qin and how does it relate to skullcap?
Huang Qin is the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) name for the dried root of Scutellaria baicalensis. In English, this plant is commonly known as Baikal skullcap or Chinese skullcap. HawaiiPharm's skullcap tincture uses the same ingredient known in TCM as Huang Qin - the dried root of Scutellaria baicalensis. The terms are interchangeable: Huang Qin = Scutellaria baicalensis root = Baikal skullcap.
How do I use skullcap liquid extract?
The suggested use is 20-30 drops taken three times daily, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Add the drops to water, tea, or juice before consuming. Shake the bottle well before each use, as natural separation may occur. Store in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. Do not exceed the suggested serving size unless directed by a healthcare professional.
Are there any precautions when taking skullcap supplement?
Scutellaria baicalensis (Baikal skullcap) may interact with blood-thinning medications and with drugs metabolized by cytochrome P450 liver enzymes - consult your doctor before use if you take prescription medications. Individuals with liver conditions should use with caution. Pregnant or nursing women should not use skullcap without medical supervision. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Huang Qin (Scutellaria Baicalensis) Root is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
