Frequently Asked Questions about Liu Ji Nu Extract
What is Liu Ji Nu / Anomalous Wormwood (Artemisia anomala) herb extract?
Liu Ji Nu is the Chinese name for the herb of Artemisia anomala, a plant of the daisy family (Asteraceae) sometimes called anomalous wormwood or diverse-leaved mugwort; the dried aerial parts are known in pharmacy as Herba Artemisiae Anomalae. This tincture is an alcohol extract of the dried herb. It is one of several Artemisia herbs we carry, and it has its own distinct traditional role. One safety point matters most: it is not for use in pregnancy. If you take any medication (especially blood thinners) or have a medical condition, please consult your practitioner. Please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Artemisia anomala herb; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol; no sugar is added. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The herb inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both.
How is Liu Ji Nu different from mugwort, wormwood and other Artemisia?
The genus Artemisia is large, and we carry several, so the botanical name matters. Liu Ji Nu is Artemisia anomala. It is different from mugwort (Ai Ye is Artemisia argyi; common mugwort is Artemisia vulgaris), from wormwood (Artemisia absinthium), from qing hao / sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua), from tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus), and from yin chen (Artemisia scoparia) and yin chen hao (Artemisia capillaris). They are different species with different traditional uses. Also note that the name "Liu Ji Nu" is sometimes applied to a different plant, Siphonostegia chinensis (northern Liu Ji Nu); ours is the southern source, Artemisia anomala. We label ours clearly so it is not confused with the others.
How do I use Liu Ji Nu / Anomalous Wormwood liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to three times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Keep to short-term use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.
Is Liu Ji Nu right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Pregnancy and nursing: do NOT use Liu Ji Nu during pregnancy - it is a blood-moving herb with a traditional emmenagogue reputation, which can be a risk in pregnancy - and avoid it while breastfeeding. Bleeding and surgery: because it is a blood-moving herb, use caution if you take blood-thinning medication, have a bleeding disorder, or are approaching surgery, and consult your practitioner. Allergies: as a member of the daisy family (Asteraceae), it may cause a reaction in people allergic to ragweed, chamomile, chrysanthemums, or related plants. Keep to short-term use. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
