Rhaponticum carthamoides, also known as Maral root or Rhaponticum, is an herbaceous perennial plant from the family Asteraceae that inhabits the sub-alpine zone (4,500–6,000 ft (1,400–1,800 m) above sea level) as well as alpine meadows. It can be found growing wild in Southern Siberia, Kazakhstan, the Altay region, and Western Sayani. Maral root is widely cultivated throughout Russia and Eastern Europe. The name Maral root comes from the maral deer who feed on it. Specifically the males would fight each other during mating season, then dig out the roots and eat them to restore strength.*

Frequently Asked Questions about Maral Root Extract
What is Maral Root / Leuzea (Rhaponticum carthamoides)?
Maral Root is a perennial plant of the daisy family (Asteraceae), native to the mountains of Siberia and the Altai. Its botanical name is Rhaponticum carthamoides, and it is also known by the synonyms Leuzea carthamoides and Stemmacantha carthamoides. The part used here is the root. The plant is named for the maral, the Siberian red deer, which is said to dig up and eat the roots. It is also called leuzea, Russian leuzea, and hornhead, and has a long history as a traditional Siberian tonic herb. The root naturally contains a group of compounds called ecdysteroids, including one known as ecdysterone. Our extract is offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-root liquid extract that carries the root's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Rhaponticum carthamoides root; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the root's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this isolated ecdysterone, and why so many names?
Good questions. First, ecdysterone: the maral root naturally contains a compound called ecdysterone, which is also sold on its own as an isolated ingredient. Our product is different - it is a whole-root herbal extract of the maral plant, not isolated or concentrated ecdysterone. Second, the names: the plant has been placed in different genera over time, so you will see it called Rhaponticum carthamoides, Leuzea carthamoides, and Stemmacantha carthamoides - these all refer to the same plant. It is also called maral root, after the Siberian maral deer, and Russian leuzea. One more note to avoid confusion: the genus name Rhaponticum resembles the rhubarb species name Rheum rhaponticum, but they are unrelated plants. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Rhaponticum carthamoides) and plant part (root).
How do I use Maral Root liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Some people find it mildly stimulating, so you may prefer to take it earlier in the day. See the safety note below. Drink the entire contents.
Is Maral Root extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Maral root is generally well tolerated. A few notes apply. Some people find it mildly stimulating, so it is best taken earlier in the day rather than at night. Because the root contains ecdysteroids, talk with your practitioner before use if you have a hormone-sensitive condition. Do not use during pregnancy or while nursing. Competitive athletes should be aware that ecdysterone is included in the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) monitoring program. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, also consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
