Frequently Asked Questions about Nopal Cactus Extract
What is Nopal Cactus (Opuntia streptacantha)?
Nopal is the Spanish name for the prickly pear cactus, and our product is made from Opuntia streptacantha, a cactus of the Cactaceae family. The part used here is the whole cactus - the flat, fleshy pads known as cladodes or nopales. It is a traditional food and herb of Mexico and the American Southwest. This is a whole-cactus liquid extract, offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from carefully sourced raw material. It is worth knowing that this is the cactus pad, which is a different part from the sweet prickly pear fruit, and that our product is a supplement extract rather than the cooked nopales served as food. This is a whole-cactus extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated compound, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. Please read the safety note below, especially if you manage your blood sugar.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Opuntia streptacantha cactus; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the cactus's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. See the safety note below.
Is this the cactus pad, the prickly pear fruit, or the food nopales?
It helps to separate these, since they all come from the prickly pear cactus. Our product is made from the whole cactus - the flat pads, called nopales or cladodes - as a concentrated liquid supplement extract. This is a different part from the prickly pear fruit (often called tuna), which is the sweet, colorful fruit the cactus produces; our product is the pad, not the fruit. It is also different from the cooked nopales you might eat as a vegetable in Mexican cuisine, since ours is a supplement extract rather than a food. As for the species, ours is Opuntia streptacantha, which is closely related to but distinct from Opuntia ficus-indica, another common prickly pear. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Opuntia streptacantha) and plant part (whole cactus) so there is no confusion with the fruit, the culinary dish, or other species.
How do I use Nopal Cactus liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. See the safety note below. Drink the entire contents.
Is Nopal Cactus extract right for everyone? Important safety information.
Nopal is a traditional food plant and is generally well tolerated, but a concentrated extract has a couple of considerations. The most important is blood sugar: nopal may lower blood glucose, so if you have diabetes or take blood-sugar medication or insulin, use caution, monitor your levels, and speak with your practitioner first, since combining them could lower your blood sugar too much. Because nopal is high in fiber, some people notice mild digestive effects such as bloating or looser stools, so do not exceed the suggested serving. Everyday culinary amounts of nopal are a normal part of the diet, but if you are pregnant or nursing, it is best to consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before using a concentrated extract. Do not use if you are allergic to nopal. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, also consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children and do not exceed the suggested serving. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Nopal Cactus (Opuntia Streptacantha) Whole Cactus is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
