Relaxed Mood Tincture - Hawthorn Berry, Lemon Balm, Saint John's Wort and Skullcap Herbal Blend
This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of four herbs extracted together in equal parts. Relaxed Mood is the name of the blend; it is a traditional herbal product, not a capsule. One of the herbs, Saint John's wort, interacts with many common medications - please read the safety information below before use.
- Hawthorn berry - Crataegus laevigata berry (Rosaceae)
- Lemon balm leaf - Melissa officinalis leaf (Lamiaceae)
- Saint John's wort herb - Hypericum perforatum flowering herb (Hypericaceae; naturally contains hypericin and hyperforin)
- Skullcap herb - Scutellaria lateriflora herb (Lamiaceae)
- Extract type: Alcohol tincture. Other ingredients: organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water

What is in the blend
- Hawthorn berry - the small red fruit of the English hawthorn, a thorny hedgerow tree of Europe.
- Lemon balm leaf - the lemon-scented leaf of a mint-family garden herb, used in teas since the Middle Ages.
- Saint John's wort - the yellow-flowered summer herb whose flowering tops naturally contain hypericin and hyperforin; these constituents are the reason it interacts with many medications.
- Skullcap - the American skullcap, a small blue-flowered plant of the mint family; commercial skullcap is sometimes adulterated with germander, which is why careful sourcing matters.
Why a tincture
The four dried herbs are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a sharper herbal taste (lemony from the balm, tart from the hawthorn), and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.
How to use
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. It may cause drowsiness - do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.
Tincture or drops?
If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same four-herb blend is available as Relaxed Mood Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

This blend contains Saint John's wort, which interacts with many common medications. Please read before use.
- Medication (Saint John's wort): it can reduce the effect of oral contraceptives (risk of unplanned pregnancy), warfarin and other blood thinners, cyclosporine and other transplant medicines, HIV medicines, digoxin, statins and some chemotherapy drugs. It must not be combined with antidepressants, migraine triptans or other serotonin-acting medicines. If you take any prescription medication, do not use this blend without talking to your doctor or pharmacist.
- Heart and blood pressure (hawthorn): hawthorn can add to the effect of digoxin and blood-pressure medicines.
- Thyroid (lemon balm): lemon balm may affect thyroid function - consult your practitioner if you have a thyroid condition or take thyroid medication.
- Drowsiness: skullcap, lemon balm and Saint John's wort can cause drowsiness and add to the effect of alcohol, sedatives and sleep medicines. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you.
- Sun: Saint John's wort can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight.
- Pregnancy / nursing: do not use.
- Surgery: stop use at least two weeks before scheduled surgery or anesthesia.
- Age: not for children.
