Frequently Asked Questions about Shi Jian Chuan Extract
What is Shi Jian Chuan / Chinese sage (Salvia chinensis) herb extract?
Shi Jian Chuan is the Chinese name for the dried aerial parts of Salvia chinensis, a plant of the mint family (Lamiaceae) also called Chinese sage; in pharmacy it is known as Herba Salviae Chinensis. This tincture is an alcohol extract of the dried herb, taken by the drop. One point matters most: Shi Jian Chuan is a strong blood-moving herb, so it is not to be used during pregnancy, and anyone on blood-thinning medication should be cautious. Please read the safety notes below carefully.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Salvia chinensis herb; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The herb inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both.
How is Shi Jian Chuan different from Dan Shen, Sage, and Chia?
They are all members of the Salvia (sage) genus, but they are different species and parts. Shi Jian Chuan is the aerial herb of Salvia chinensis, which we carry here. Dan Shen (also sold as Red Sage) is the root of Salvia miltiorrhiza; common Sage is the leaf of Salvia officinalis; White Sage is the leaf of Salvia apiana; and Chia is the seed of Salvia hispanica - all listed separately. Although Dan Shen is also a blood-moving Salvia, it is a different species and part. We label ours clearly as Salvia chinensis herb.
How do I use Shi Jian Chuan / Chinese sage liquid extract?
Because this is a strong blood-moving herb, use it only under the guidance of a qualified practitioner, and keep to short-term use. Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops in 2 oz of water, up to three times a day, or as directed by your practitioner. Do NOT use it during pregnancy. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.
Is Shi Jian Chuan right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Pregnancy: Shi Jian Chuan is a strong blood-moving herb that can stimulate the uterus and promote bleeding, so do NOT use it during pregnancy - it may raise the risk of miscarriage, premature labor, or heavy uterine bleeding; avoid it while breastfeeding as well. Bleeding and surgery: because it moves the blood, use caution if you take blood-thinning or antiplatelet medication, have a bleeding disorder, or are approaching surgery, and consult your practitioner first. Children: use only with professional guidance. Keep to short-term use and ideally use it only under the guidance of a qualified practitioner. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. Keep out of reach of children. To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
