Frequently Asked Questions about Suma Extract
What is Suma (Pfaffia paniculata) root extract?
Suma is a large, sprawling ground vine of the amaranth family (Amaranthaceae), botanically Pfaffia paniculata, native to South America, including the Amazon region of Brazil. The root is the part used. It is popularly called "Brazilian ginseng" and, in Portuguese, para toda, meaning "for all things," though it is not botanically related to true ginseng. It is also known by the botanical synonym Hebanthe eriantha. The root naturally contains compounds such as ecdysteroids and saponins. Our extract is made from the dried root and offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-root liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Pfaffia paniculata root; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the root's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is suma the same as ginseng?
No. Suma is often nicknamed "Brazilian ginseng," but that is a common name, not a botanical relationship. True ginseng is Panax (in the family Araliaceae), while suma is Pfaffia paniculata, a completely different plant in the amaranth family. So although the nickname suggests a link, they are unrelated plants. It also helps to know that the word "suma" has other meanings and is used as a brand and place name; our product is specifically the herb Pfaffia paniculata (also written as the synonym Hebanthe eriantha), and only the root. We label our product clearly by botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion with true ginseng or with the other meanings of the word.
How do I use Suma liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Suma extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Suma is not right for everyone. It naturally contains hormone-like compounds called ecdysteroids, so it is best used with caution by anyone with a hormone-sensitive condition, and it is best avoided during pregnancy. If you are nursing, take any medication, or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Suma (Pfaffia Paniculata) Root is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
