Frequently Asked Questions about Sweet Woodruff Extract
What is Sweet Woodruff (Galium odoratum) herb extract?
Sweet Woodruff is a liquid extract of the dried herb (the above-ground parts) of Galium odoratum, a low, mat-forming perennial of the Rubiaceae family, also known as Waldmeister or master of the woods and historically listed as Asperula odorata. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. Sweet woodruff is famous for its sweet, hay-like fragrance, which comes from coumarin. That same compound is why safety matters: coumarin can act as a blood thinner and, in large or long-term amounts, has been linked to liver effects, so this herb is not for everyone and not for prolonged use. Please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Galium odoratum herb; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The herb inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both.
Is sweet woodruff the same as cleavers or Solomon's seal?
No. Sweet woodruff is Galium odoratum. Cleavers is a close relative in the same genus, Galium aparine, which we sell separately - it uses the above-ground parts too but is a different species with a different traditional use. Solomon's seal (Polygonatum odoratum) only shares the species word "odoratum" (meaning fragrant); it is a completely different plant from another family (Asparagaceae). Sweet woodruff also belongs to a group of coumarin-rich plants that includes sweetgrass and tonka bean, all of which share the same blood-thinning cautions. We label ours clearly as Galium odoratum so its identity - and its coumarin content - are clear.
How do I use Sweet Woodruff liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and do not use it for long, continuous periods, because of its coumarin content. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.
Is Sweet Woodruff right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Coumarin: sweet woodruff naturally contains coumarin (the source of its sweet scent), which can act as a blood thinner. Medications: use caution if you take anticoagulant or antiplatelet ("blood thinner") medicines or are being treated for a heart or circulatory condition, and talk to your doctor first. Liver and long-term use: do not use it for long, continuous periods or in large amounts - high or prolonged intake of coumarin has been linked to headaches, drowsiness, dizziness and, rarely, liver damage. Quality: coumarin can convert to a stronger anticoagulant (dicoumarol) if the herb is poorly dried or stored damp, so use only well-dried material. Pregnancy and nursing: do NOT use it during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not give it to infants or young children. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Sweet Woodruff (Galium Odoratum) Herb is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
