Frequently Asked Questions about Tou Gu Cao Extract
What is Tou Gu Cao / speranskia (Speranskia tuberculata) herb extract?
Tou Gu Cao is the Chinese name for the dried aerial parts of Speranskia tuberculata, a plant of the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae); in pharmacy it is Herba Speranskiae, and in English it is called tuberculate speranskia herb. This tincture is an alcohol extract of the dried herb, taken by the drop. Two notes: the name "Tou Gu Cao" is shared by more than one plant (ours is the Speranskia form, considered non-toxic), and it is a blood-moving herb, so it is not to be used during pregnancy. Please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Speranskia tuberculata herb; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The herb inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both.
Is Tou Gu Cao always the same plant?
Not quite - and it is worth knowing. "Tou Gu Cao" is a shared common name used for more than one botanically different plant. Ours is Speranskia tuberculata (the spurge-family form, traditionally recorded as non-toxic). The name is also used for garden balsam, Impatiens balsamina (sometimes called Feng Xian Tou Gu Cao), which is a different plant noted as slightly toxic - we do not use that species. It is also not the same as Jewelweed (Impatiens pallida), which we list separately. We label ours clearly as Speranskia tuberculata.
How do I use Tou Gu Cao / speranskia liquid extract?
Because it is a blood-moving herb, use it under the guidance of a qualified practitioner and keep to short-term use. Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops in 2 oz of water, up to three times a day, or as directed by your practitioner. Do NOT use it during pregnancy. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.
Is Tou Gu Cao right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. The Speranskia form of Tou Gu Cao is regarded as non-toxic in classical sources and has a wide margin of safety in animal testing. Pregnancy and nursing: it is a blood-moving herb that can stimulate the uterus, so do NOT use it during pregnancy, and consult your practitioner before use while breastfeeding. Bleeding and surgery: because it moves the blood, use caution if you take blood-thinning or antiplatelet medication, have a bleeding disorder, or are approaching surgery, and consult your practitioner first. Keep to the suggested serving and short-term use. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
