Frequently Asked Questions about Watercress Extract
What is Watercress (Nasturtium officinale) herb extract?
Watercress is a fast-growing, leafy aquatic plant of the cabbage or mustard family (Brassicaceae), botanically Nasturtium officinale. It is a popular peppery salad green, and the part used here is the herb - the leafy aerial parts. This is a whole-herb liquid extract, offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from carefully sourced raw material. One point is worth clarifying from the start: despite the botanical genus name Nasturtium, watercress is not the same plant as the garden nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus), the ornamental flower that most people picture when they hear the word "nasturtium." This is a whole-herb extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated compound, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. Please read the safety note below, especially if you take blood thinners or have a thyroid condition.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Nasturtium officinale herb; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the herb's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. See the safety note below.
Is watercress the same as the garden nasturtium flower?
No, and this is a common and understandable point of confusion. Watercress is botanically Nasturtium officinale, a leafy green in the cabbage family (Brassicaceae) that grows in and around water. The garden nasturtium, on the other hand, is Tropaeolum majus, a completely different ornamental plant grown for its colorful, edible flowers and round leaves. The word "nasturtium" is used as a common name for the garden flower, but it is also the botanical genus name of watercress, which is where the mix-up comes from. Our product is the watercress - the leafy cruciferous green - not the garden nasturtium flower. It is also different from garden cress (Lepidium sativum), another salad cress. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Nasturtium officinale) and plant part (herb) so there is no confusion with the ornamental nasturtium or with other cresses.
How do I use Watercress liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. See the safety note below. Drink the entire contents.
Is Watercress extract right for everyone? Important safety information.
Watercress is an everyday food green and is generally well tolerated, but a concentrated extract has a couple of considerations. Watercress is naturally rich in vitamin K, which can interfere with blood-thinning medication, so if you take a blood thinner such as warfarin, speak with your practitioner before use and keep your intake consistent. Watercress is also a cruciferous plant, and in large amounts cruciferous plants can affect the thyroid, so use caution if you have a thyroid condition. Everyday culinary amounts of watercress are a normal part of the diet during pregnancy, but if you are pregnant or nursing, it is best to consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before using a concentrated extract. Do not use if you are allergic to watercress or other plants in the cabbage family. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, also consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children and do not exceed the suggested serving. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Watercress (Nasturtium Officinale) Herb is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
