Frequently Asked Questions about Wild Indigo Extract
What is Wild Indigo (Baptisia tinctoria) root extract?
Wild Indigo is a perennial plant of the pea or legume family (Fabaceae), botanically Baptisia tinctoria and commonly called yellow wild indigo. It is native to eastern North America, where it grows in dry woods and clearings, producing yellow pea-like flowers. The part used here is the root. It carries several folk names, including horsefly weed, rattleweed, and indigo weed; the name "false indigo" comes from its historical use as a substitute for true indigo dye. Our extract is made from the dried root and offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-root liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Baptisia tinctoria root; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the root's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this the garden false indigo, or a dye plant?
Neither, and both names cause confusion. First, species: our product is Baptisia tinctoria (yellow wild indigo), and it is the root that is used. The popular garden plant often called "false indigo" is usually a different species, Baptisia australis (blue false indigo), grown as an ornamental for its blue flowers - that is not our product. Second, dye: although "wild indigo" and "false indigo" contain the word "indigo," this plant is not the true indigo dye plant (Indigofera tinctoria), nor is it woad (Isatis); Baptisia was only ever used as a poor substitute for indigo dye. Our product is specifically the root of Baptisia tinctoria, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion with the ornamental species or with true indigo.
How do I use Wild Indigo liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take the amount directed on the label in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Wild indigo is traditionally used in small amounts and for short periods only; do not exceed the suggested serving. Drink the entire contents.
Is Wild Indigo extract right for everyone? Important safety information.
Wild Indigo is not right for everyone, and it calls for extra caution. It can be toxic if taken in large amounts, so use it only in small amounts and for short periods, and never exceed the suggested serving; taking too much may cause nausea, vomiting, or other stomach upset. It is best used under the guidance of a qualified practitioner. Do not use it during pregnancy. If you are nursing, take any medication, or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Not for children. Keep out of reach of children. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Wild Indigo (Baptisia Tinctoria) Root is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
