Frequently Asked Questions about African Mango Extract
What is African Mango (Irvingia gabonensis) seed extract?
African mango is the common name for Irvingia gabonensis, a forest tree of the family Irvingiaceae native to West and Central Africa. Despite its name, it is not the common mango you eat (that is Mangifera indica, a different plant in a different family) - the two only share a mango-like fruit appearance. The part used is the seed, or kernel, widely known as the dika nut or ogbono, which in West African cooking is traditionally ground and used as a soup thickener. The tree is also called bush mango or wild mango. Our product is made from the dried seed and offered in two forms - an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture - each from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-seed liquid extract that carries the seed's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Irvingia gabonensis seed; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the seed's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.
Is African mango the same as regular mango, or the same as ogbono soup?
Neither, exactly, and both points are worth clarifying. First, the plant: African mango (Irvingia gabonensis) is not the common mango (Mangifera indica). They are different trees in different botanical families; the name "African mango" comes from the mango-like look of the fruit, not from a botanical relationship. If you are looking for the sweet mango fruit, that is a different product entirely. Second, the seed: the African mango seed is known as dika or ogbono, and in West African cuisine the ground seed is used as a thickener for ogbono soup - that is a culinary ingredient, whereas our product is a concentrated liquid extract of the seed that you take by the drop. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Irvingia gabonensis), plant part (seed) and format (liquid extract) so there is no confusion with the common mango or with the culinary ogbono.
How do I use African Mango liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is African Mango extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
African mango is not right for everyone. If you are pregnant or nursing, take any medication, or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. If you have known seed or food sensitivities, introduce it cautiously. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store as directed on the label.
