Frequently Asked Questions about Acacia Extract
What is gum arabic extract used for?
Gum arabic, also called acacia gum, is the dried natural gum harvested from the sap of the Acacia senegal tree (botanically reclassified as Senegalia senegal), which grows across the Sahel region of Africa, particularly Sudan, Chad, and Senegal. It is one of the oldest traded natural products, used for thousands of years, and today is recognized as a soluble dietary fiber. Gum arabic dissolves readily in water to form a clear, nearly tasteless liquid, which is why it has long been used in foods and beverages as a natural stabilizer. As a dietary supplement, gum arabic is valued simply as a gentle, well-tolerated source of soluble fiber that can be added to water, tea, or juice as part of a fiber-rich daily routine. Our alcohol-free extract is prepared from quality-tested acacia gum in a base of vegetable glycerin and purified water. This is a dietary supplement intended to support general wellness; it is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free glycerite and the tincture?
Both are liquid extracts of the same dried acacia gum; the difference is the solvent. This alcohol-free version uses vegetable glycerin and purified water (a glycerite), with no alcohol - a good choice for those who prefer to avoid it. The tincture version uses a traditional alcohol base, which some prefer for its long shelf life and traditional extraction profile. Both are produced in our FDA-registered Hawaii facility.
What is the botanical background of gum arabic, and how is it different from acacia bark?
Gum arabic comes from trees in the family Fabaceae (the legume family). It is the hardened exudate - a natural gum - that seeps from the trunk and branches of Acacia senegal (now often classified as Senegalia senegal) and the related Acacia seyal, trees of the African Sahel; the finest grade is traditionally known as Sudan gum arabic. As a food additive it carries the European code E414 and is used worldwide as an emulsifier and stabilizer in soft drinks, confectionery, and icings. It is important not to confuse gum arabic with acacia bark extract: gum arabic is the dried sap (gum) of Acacia senegal and is a soluble fiber, whereas acacia bark extract is made from the bark of a different species, Acacia arabica (also called Acacia nilotica or Vachellia nilotica). They come from related trees but are entirely different parts and products. Gum arabic should also not be confused with the ornamental Australian wattles, which kept the genus name Acacia after the 2005 botanical reclassification. Our product is the gum, prepared as a convenient liquid extract.
How do I use the alcohol-free gum arabic extract?
Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 3 times daily, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because gum arabic is a soluble fiber, it is a good idea to take it with a full glass of water. Shake well before use. As an alcohol-free glycerite, refrigerate after opening. Keep out of the reach of children.
Are there any precautions with gum arabic?
Gum arabic is a soluble dietary fiber and is generally very well tolerated. As with any fiber, it is best to introduce it gradually: some people may notice mild gas or bloating when first increasing fiber intake, which usually settles as the body adjusts. Drink plenty of water when taking it. Because soluble fiber can slow the absorption of some substances, if you take prescription medication it is sensible to take it separately from this extract, by a couple of hours, and to check with your pharmacist or practitioner. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare practitioner before use. Allergic reactions to gum arabic are rare but possible; discontinue use and seek advice if one occurs. Keep out of the reach of children. This product is a dietary supplement and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
