Important safety information - please read before use

Padauk has two specific cautions worth knowing before use.

  • Allergy / sensitization: padauk is a well-known allergen - working with the wood or its dust can cause allergic skin rashes (contact dermatitis) and eye or breathing irritation, and it is classified as a "sensitizer." Do NOT use it if you are sensitive or allergic to padauk, and stop use if any rash, itching or breathing symptoms occur.
  • Internal use: the oral use of padauk bark has not been well studied, so keep strictly to the suggested serving and to short-term use - do not take large amounts.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: safety information is lacking, so consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use; it is best avoided in pregnancy.
  • Contains alcohol. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about African Padauk Extract
What is African Padauk (Pterocarpus soyauxii) bark extract?
African padauk is a liquid extract of the dried bark of Pterocarpus soyauxii, a red African hardwood tree of the Fabaceae (legume) family, also known as camwood, barwood, coral wood or "blood-wood" (Pau-sangue) for its deep red color. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. Two points are worth knowing: padauk is a well-known allergen (a "sensitizer") in people who work with the wood, so anyone sensitive to it should avoid it; and its internal use is not well studied. Both points are covered in the safety notes. It should also not be confused with the other "Pterocarpus" and "sandalwood" plants described below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Pterocarpus soyauxii bark; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The bark inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is African padauk the same as kino, red sandalwood or sandalwood?
No - several red woods in the Pterocarpus genus (and the sandalwoods) get mixed up, so it helps to be clear. Ours is Pterocarpus soyauxii, African padauk (camwood). Kino, or Vijaysar, is a different species, Pterocarpus marsupium, from India. Red sandalwood (Rakta Chandana) is yet another, Pterocarpus santalinus. And "true" sandalwood is a completely different genus, Santalum album. They are all prized red or fragrant woods but are distinct plants with different chemistry and uses, so they are not interchangeable. We label ours clearly as African padauk (Pterocarpus soyauxii) bark. Note: several Pterocarpus species are protected under CITES, so responsible sourcing matters.
How do I use African Padauk liquid extract?
Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and keep to short-term use, since its internal use is not well studied. Because of the allergy caution below, please read the safety information before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is African Padauk right for everyone? Safety information.

Internal use: the oral use of padauk bark has not been well studied, so keep strictly to the suggested serving and to short-term use - do not take large amounts. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.
