Aloe ferox is one of the commercially important species in the Aloe genus, which contains over 500 species; it is harvested from wild and cultivated populations in the Cape Fold Mountains of the Western and Eastern Cape provinces. Aloe ferox is distinct from Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis), which is native to the Arabian Peninsula and Canary Islands; the two species differ in leaf morphology, phytochemical composition, and traditional uses.
