Fraxinus (Fraxinus Chinensis) is a flowering deciduous tree that belongs to the Oleaceae family. It’s spread mainly in China, Korea and Japan. The tree can grow up to 25 m in height.*

Ash bark (Qin Pi) is fairly gentle in tradition, but a few specific cautions apply.
- Coumarins / blood thinning: the bark naturally contains coumarins (esculin and esculetin) with mild blood-thinning (anticoagulant) properties. If you take blood-thinning or anti-clotting medicines (such as warfarin or aspirin), have a bleeding or clotting disorder, or are due to have surgery, do not use it without medical advice.
- Pregnancy / nursing: it is traditionally avoided in pregnancy - do NOT use it if you are pregnant unless a qualified practitioner has specifically advised it. Consult a practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding.
- Allergy: avoid it if you are sensitive to ash (Fraxinus) or to coumarins.
- Traditional note: it is a cold, bitter herb and is traditionally not suited to those with a "cold" or weak stomach or digestion.
- Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.

When I ordered this tincture I thought it was papaver somniferum, a sleep aid. I now understand that California poppy is a different genus. The tincture seems ok, nothing dramatic, but I guess it helps one sleep if you take the 30 drps as the instructions recommend.
