Important safety information - please read before use

Ash bark (Qin Pi) is fairly gentle in tradition, but a few specific cautions apply.

  • Coumarins / blood thinning: the bark naturally contains coumarins (esculin and esculetin) with mild blood-thinning (anticoagulant) properties. If you take blood-thinning or anti-clotting medicines (such as warfarin or aspirin), have a bleeding or clotting disorder, or are due to have surgery, do not use it without medical advice.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: it is traditionally avoided in pregnancy - do NOT use it if you are pregnant unless a qualified practitioner has specifically advised it. Consult a practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding.
  • Allergy: avoid it if you are sensitive to ash (Fraxinus) or to coumarins.
  • Traditional note: it is a cold, bitter herb and is traditionally not suited to those with a "cold" or weak stomach or digestion.
  • Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Fraxinus Extract
What is Fraxinus / Qin Pi (Fraxinus chinensis) bark extract?
Fraxinus is a liquid extract of the dried bark of Fraxinus chinensis, the Chinese ash, a tree of the Oleaceae family; the bark is known in traditional Chinese medicine as Qin Pi (Cortex Fraxini) and in English as ash bark. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. Two things are worth knowing up front: this bark contains natural coumarins (esculin and esculetin) and has an important pregnancy caution and a note for anyone on blood-thinning medication, both explained in the safety section below; and it should not be confused with the several unrelated plants that share the botanical species name chinensis, such as Coptis chinensis, Pulsatilla chinensis (Bai Tou Weng), Clematis chinensis or Litchi chinensis.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Fraxinus chinensis bark; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, giving a milder taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The bark inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is Fraxinus the same as Qin Pi or ash bark?
Yes - they are the same thing under different names. Fraxinus is the botanical genus name; Qin Pi is the traditional Chinese medicine name for the bark; and ash bark is the common English name. All three refer to the bark of Fraxinus chinensis (Chinese ash); you may also see the pharmacopeial name Cortex Fraxini. So if you have seen this listed as Fraxinus, as Qin Pi or as ash bark, it is the one and the same bark. One note for accuracy: the official Qin Pi of Chinese pharmacopeia can come from several closely related ash species (such as Fraxinus rhynchophylla, F. szaboana and F. stylosa as well as F. chinensis); ours is Fraxinus chinensis. We label it clearly so the names are not confusing.
How do I use Fraxinus liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. The alcohol-free glycerite has a milder taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Because of the pregnancy and blood-thinning cautions below, please read the safety information before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Fraxinus right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Ash bark (Qin Pi) is considered a fairly gentle herb in tradition, but a few cautions apply. Coumarins and blood thinning: the bark naturally contains coumarins (esculin and esculetin) that have mild blood-thinning (anticoagulant) properties, so if you take blood-thinning or anti-clotting medicines (such as warfarin or aspirin), have a bleeding or clotting disorder, or are due to have surgery, do not use it without medical advice. Pregnancy and nursing: it is traditionally avoided in pregnancy - do NOT use it if you are pregnant unless a qualified practitioner has specifically advised it, and consult a practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding. Allergy: avoid it if you are sensitive to ash (Fraxinus) or to coumarins. In traditional terms it is a cold, bitter herb and is not suited to those with a "cold" or weak stomach or digestion. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
