Fu Ling, Poria (Poria Cocos) has a few other common names, such as Indian buead, China root, Fu Ling Pi, tuckahoe, Fu Shen, hoelen, and so on. As a matter of fact, this is a white fungus on wood, in particular on the roots of Japanese red pine and masson pine in the Pinaceae family. Today it is wild or cultivated, mainly produced in Yunnan, Anhui, Hubei, Henan, Sichuan and other places in China. The common form of poria fungus is its sclerotium, most of which are in the shape of irregular chunk, sphere, compressiform, oblong, or oval. They are in different sizes, usually less than 10cm in the smaller ones and 20cm to 30cm, even larger, in bigger ones. Skin is grayish brown or dark brown, in the shape of shrinking tumor, white with slightly pin inside, and composed of numerous hyphae. Fruiting body looks like mushroom, 0.5 to 2mm in diameter.*

Frequently Asked Questions about Fu Ling Extract
What is Fu Ling (Poria cocos)?
Fu Ling is the traditional Chinese name for Poria cocos, a fungus rather than a plant. What is used is its sclerotium - a firm, compact underground mass the fungus forms, typically on the roots of pine trees. Under modern classification the fungus is accepted as Wolfiporia extensa, though the name Poria cocos remains widely used. In English it has long been called tuckahoe, China root, or Indian bread. Our product is made from the dried sclerotium and offered in two forms - an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture - each from ethically sourced, wild-harvested raw material. This is a whole-sclerotium liquid extract that carries the fungus's natural spectrum of constituents, such as its polysaccharides, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by name and the part used.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Poria cocos sclerotium; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the fungus's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.
Is Fu Ling the same as Fu Shen, and what is tuckahoe?
Two clarifications. First, Fu Ling and Fu Shen come from the same fungus but are different parts: Fu Ling is the main body of the sclerotium, while Fu Shen is specifically the portion that grows around the small pine rootlet, and the two are used as separate items in traditional Chinese herbalism. Our product is Fu Ling. Second, "tuckahoe" is an old English common name for this fungus (also called China root and Indian bread); note that Tuckahoe is also the name of several places in the United States, so the word alone can be ambiguous - our product is the poria fungus, Poria cocos (Wolfiporia extensa). We label our product clearly by name, botanical source and the part used so there is no confusion with Fu Shen or with the place name.
How do I use Fu Ling liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 3 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Fu Ling extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Fu Ling is generally considered a mild fungus with a long history of use, but it is not right for everyone. If you are pregnant or nursing, take any medication, or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
