Frequently Asked Questions about Gentian Extract
What is Gentian (Gentiana lutea) root?
Gentian is a tall flowering plant of the European mountains, botanically named Gentiana lutea and commonly called yellow gentian or great yellow gentian for its clusters of bright yellow flowers. It belongs to the family Gentianaceae. The part used is its thick root, which is famous for being one of the most intensely bitter of all natural substances - a bitterness that comes largely from a compound called gentiopicroside. For generations that bitterness has made gentian root the classic bittering agent behind traditional European aperitifs and digestive bitters, such as Suze and Angostura. Our extract is made from the dried root and offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite. Each batch is made from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-root liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Gentiana lutea root; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, which softens the intense bitterness and suits those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the root's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop; expect a very bitter taste either way. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is gentian the same as gentian violet?
No - this is a very important distinction. Gentian violet (also called crystal violet or methyl violet) is a synthetic dye used as a topical antiseptic; it was given the name "gentian" only because its color resembles the blue-purple of gentian flowers, and it has nothing to do with the gentian plant at all. Our product is the herb: the root of Gentiana lutea, the yellow gentian. It is also different from the many ornamental blue gentians grown as alpine garden flowers - those are other Gentiana species prized for their looks, while our product is specifically the bitter root of Gentiana lutea used traditionally as a flavoring and herb. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Gentiana lutea), plant part (root) and format (liquid extract) so there is no confusion with gentian violet dye or with ornamental garden gentians.
How do I use Gentian root liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Note that gentian is extremely bitter, so diluting it well is recommended.
Is Gentian root extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Gentian is a very bitter herb, and bitter herbs naturally prompt the stomach to produce more digestive juices, so gentian is traditionally avoided by people with a peptic ulcer, gastritis, or conditions involving high stomach acid such as acid reflux. If you are pregnant or nursing, take any medication, or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
