Important safety information - please read before use

Glehnia is a gentle traditional tonic root, but it carries a few specific cautions.

  • Sun sensitivity: as a carrot-family plant, glehnia contains furanocoumarins (such as psoralen and bergapten) that can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight - avoid strong sun and tanning beds while using it, especially in concentrated form, and stop if your skin reacts.
  • Medications: these same compounds can affect how the body processes some medicines (through the liver enzyme CYP3A4) - consult your practitioner before use if you take any medication.
  • Traditional incompatibility: it is considered incompatible with Li Lu (Veratrum), a toxic plant - do not combine them.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do NOT use it during pregnancy, and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding.
  • Allergy: it is in the Apiaceae (carrot/parsley) family - avoid it if you are sensitive to that family. Do not give it to infants or young children. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Glehnia Extract
What is Glehnia (Glehnia littoralis) root extract?
Glehnia is a liquid extract of the dried root of Glehnia littoralis, a seashore plant of the Apiaceae (carrot/parsley) family known in traditional Chinese medicine as Bei Sha Shen (northern sha shen), and also called coastal glehnia or American silvertop. It is a gentle, moistening tonic root. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. Two things are worth knowing: this is Bei Sha Shen (Glehnia littoralis) - the same plant we also list under the name American Silvertop - and a different plant from Nan Sha Shen, which is ladybell (Adenophora triphylla, a bellflower), and from the other traditional "shen" roots; and because it is in the carrot family it contains natural furanocoumarins, which carry sun-sensitivity and medication cautions, so please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Glehnia littoralis root; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, giving it a milder taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is Bei Sha Shen the same as Nan Sha Shen or American Silvertop?
It helps to be clear, because these names cause confusion. Bei Sha Shen ("northern sha shen") is Glehnia littoralis, this product - and "American Silvertop" is simply another common name for the very same plant, which we also list separately. Nan Sha Shen ("southern sha shen") is a different plant, ladybell (Adenophora triphylla), a bellflower in the Campanulaceae family that we sell separately. The two "sha shen" are used similarly in tradition but are botanically unrelated - Bei Sha Shen is in the carrot family, Nan Sha Shen in the bellflower family. Other "shen" roots are different plants again: ginseng is Ren Shen (Panax), Xuan Shen is Scrophularia and Dan Shen is Salvia. We label ours clearly as glehnia / Bei Sha Shen (Glehnia littoralis) so it is not confused with ladybell or the other shen roots.
How do I use Glehnia liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml), up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner, diluted in a little water, tea or juice. The alcohol-free glycerite has a milder taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Because glehnia contains furanocoumarins and has a traditional incompatibility, please read the safety information below before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Glehnia right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Glehnia (Bei Sha Shen) is a gentle traditional tonic root, but it carries a few specific cautions. Sun sensitivity: as a carrot-family plant, glehnia contains furanocoumarins (such as psoralen and bergapten) that can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight, so avoid strong sun and tanning beds while using it, especially in concentrated form, and stop if your skin reacts. Medications: these same compounds can affect how the body processes some medicines (through a liver enzyme, CYP3A4), so consult your practitioner before use if you take any medication. Pregnancy and nursing: do NOT use it during pregnancy, and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding. Allergy: it is in the Apiaceae (carrot/parsley) family, so avoid it if you are sensitive to that family. Do not use it to self-treat a cough, a lung problem or any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
