Frequently Asked Questions about He Shou Wu Extract
What is He Shou Wu (Fo-Ti) and its botanical name?
He Shou Wu is one of the best-known herbs of traditional Chinese herbalism, prepared from the root of a climbing vine in the buckwheat family (Polygonaceae). For a long time the plant was known botanically as Polygonum multiflorum, and that name is still the most common on labels and in the trade. Under modern botanical classification, however, the accepted name is Reynoutria multiflora, and you will also see the synonym Fallopia multiflora in many references - all three names refer to the same plant. In the West the herb is widely sold under the trade name "Fo-Ti," while its other common names include Chinese knotweed, flowery knotweed and tuber fleeceflower. Our extract is made specifically from the prepared root, the traditionally processed form known in Chinese as zhi shou wu, rather than the raw root. Each batch is prepared as a concentrated liquid and offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite. This is a whole-root liquid extract carrying the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same prepared He Shou Wu (Polygonum multiflorum) root; only the solvent differs. The tincture is a crude first-extraction preparation made with organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable USP glycerin and purified water, giving it a naturally mild, sweet taste that suits those who avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Why does the label say Polygonum multiflorum, and what is prepared root?
Two points often cause confusion. First, the botanical name: our label uses Polygonum multiflorum because it remains the most widely recognized name for this herb, but botanists have reclassified the plant, and its currently accepted name is Reynoutria multiflora (with Fallopia multiflora as a common synonym). All of these names, along with the trade name Fo-Ti, point to the same plant. It is a different species from Japanese knotweed (Reynoutria japonica), the plant often used as a source of resveratrol, so the two should not be confused. Second, the plant part and processing: traditional Chinese herbalism distinguishes the raw root from the prepared root, called zhi shou wu, which is processed with black bean liquid. Our extract is made from the prepared root. We label our product clearly by name, plant part and processing so there is no confusion.
How do I use He Shou Wu liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Do not use for prolonged periods.
Is He Shou Wu extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Important safety information: consuming He Shou Wu (Fo-Ti) may cause liver injury. Discontinue use and consult a physician immediately if you develop symptoms of liver trouble such as fatigue, abdominal pain, dark urine, or jaundice. Do not use if you are pregnant or nursing, and do not use for prolonged periods of time. If you have any liver condition, take medication, or have a medical concern, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our He Shou Wu (Polygonum Multiflorum) Root is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
