Frequently Asked Questions about Hu Zhang Extract
What is Hu Zhang (Japanese Knotweed) and its botanical name?
Hu Zhang is the traditional Chinese name for the root of a hardy perennial plant in the buckwheat family (Polygonaceae), known in English as Japanese knotweed. For many years the plant was classified botanically as Polygonum cuspidatum, and that name is still the most common on labels. Under modern classification, however, the accepted name is Reynoutria japonica, and the widely used synonym Fallopia japonica appears in many references - all three refer to the same plant. Other common names include Mexican bamboo and, in Japanese, itadori. Our extract is made from the dried root of the plant. Note that this is a different species from He Shou Wu (Reynoutria multiflora); the two share a plant family but are not the same herb. Each batch is prepared from ethically sourced, wild-harvested raw material as a concentrated liquid, and offered in two forms - an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture. This is a whole-root liquid extract carrying the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same wild-harvested Hu Zhang (Polygonum cuspidatum) root; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with roughly 60% vegetable glycerin and 40% purified water, giving it a naturally mild, sweet taste that suits those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses a traditional blend of alcohol, vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional extraction method that yields a super-concentrated extract. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.
Is this the same as resveratrol, and why does the label say Polygonum cuspidatum?
No - this is an important distinction. Japanese knotweed root is one of the plant world's best-known natural sources of resveratrol, a compound also found in grapes, but resveratrol supplements are an isolated, purified single compound. Our product is different: it is a whole-root liquid extract that preserves the plant's own natural spectrum of constituents rather than concentrating any single isolated molecule. If you are specifically looking for a purified resveratrol isolate, that is a different type of product. On the botanical name: our label uses Polygonum cuspidatum because it remains the most widely recognized name, but the plant has been reclassified, and its currently accepted name is Reynoutria japonica (with Fallopia japonica as a common synonym). It also helps to know that Japanese knotweed is famous as an aggressive invasive plant in many regions; our product is a cultivated or wild-harvested herbal extract, labeled clearly by botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion.
How do I use Hu Zhang liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 3 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Hu Zhang extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Hu Zhang is not appropriate for everyone. The root naturally contains anthraquinones such as emodin, which in larger amounts can have a laxative effect, so it is best used at the suggested serving. If you are pregnant or nursing, take any medication - including blood-thinning medication - or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
