Frequently Asked Questions about Huang Jing Extract
What is Huang Jing (Polygonatum kingianum) extract?
Huang Jing is a liquid extract of the dried rhizome of Polygonatum kingianum, one of the plants that provide the traditional Chinese tonic known as Huang Jing (Rhizoma Polygonati; the other official sources are Polygonatum sibiricum and Polygonatum cyrtonema). It is a well-known medicine-and-food herb in China, used in porridge, rice and teas. This tincture is cold-macerated in organic alcohol from rhizome responsibly sourced and prepared in the USA. Please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Huang Jing rhizome; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol, the classic cold-maceration method that yields a more concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
How is Huang Jing different from your Solomon's Seal products?
They belong to the same plant group (Polygonatum) but are different species and different traditional herbs. Huang Jing is Polygonatum kingianum (sometimes called King Solomon's Seal), the tonic known in Chinese as Huang Jing. Our Solomon's Seal made from Polygonatum biflorum is the American Solomon's Seal, and our Solomon's Seal made from Polygonatum odoratum is the herb known in Chinese as Yu Zhu. We label each by its botanical name so they are not confused.
How do I use Huang Jing liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is about 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of juice or water, up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and read the safety information below before use.
Is Huang Jing right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Huang Jing has a long history as both a food and a tonic and is considered low in toxicity. A few points are worth knowing. Traditionally the raw rhizome is processed (steamed and dried) before use, because the raw herb can irritate the throat and stomach; a properly prepared extract like this is intended to avoid that. Huang Jing may lower blood sugar, so if you have diabetes or take medication that affects blood sugar, monitor closely and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner. Do NOT use during pregnancy or while nursing, as safety data is lacking, and use with caution if you have a liver condition. Because of its rich, moistening nature it may cause fullness or bloating in people with weak digestion. If you take any medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Huang Jing (Polygonatum Kingianum) Root is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
