Important safety information - please read before use

Indian mallow has low acute toxicity, but it is little studied - a few cautions are sensible.

  • Keep to the serving: do not exceed the suggested amount - higher doses have shown effects on the liver and signs of DNA damage in studies, and the extract has not been well studied - so keep to modest, short-term use.
  • Allergy: it is in the Malvaceae (mallow) family - avoid it if you are sensitive to that family.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do NOT use it during pregnancy, and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding.
  • Not the same as Bala: do not confuse it with Bala / country mallow (Sida cordifolia), which contains ephedrine.
  • Contains alcohol. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Indian Mallow Extract
What is Indian Mallow / Atibala (Abutilon indicum) seed extract?
Indian mallow is a liquid extract of the dried seed of Abutilon indicum, a mucilage-rich plant of the Malvaceae (mallow) family known in Ayurveda as Atibala, and also called Kanghi or country mallow. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. Two things are worth knowing: this is Indian mallow / Atibala (Abutilon indicum), which should not be confused with Bala or "country mallow," Sida cordifolia - a different plant that contains ephedrine - nor with common mallow (Malva sylvestris) or marshmallow (Althaea officinalis), which we sell separately; and this seed has been little studied for safety, especially as a concentrated extract, so please read the safety notes below and keep to modest use.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Abutilon indicum seed; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is Atibala the same as Bala, common mallow or marshmallow?
No - several "mallows" are easy to mix up, and one distinction really matters. Atibala is Abutilon indicum (Indian mallow). Bala is a different plant, Sida cordifolia, sometimes also called country mallow - and importantly Sida cordifolia contains ephedrine, a stimulant, so it should never be confused with Atibala. Common mallow is Malva sylvestris, and marshmallow is Althaea officinalis - both mucilage-rich mallow-family plants we sell separately, but different genera. All of these are in the Malvaceae (mallow) family and several share a soothing, mucilaginous character, but they are different plants. We label ours clearly as Indian mallow / Atibala (Abutilon indicum), the seed, so it is not confused with Bala (Sida), common mallow or marshmallow.
How do I use Indian Mallow liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml), up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner, diluted in a little water, tea or juice. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and keep to modest, short-term use since this seed is little studied. Please read the safety information below before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Indian Mallow right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Indian mallow (Atibala) is a mallow-family seed with low acute toxicity, but it has been little studied - especially as a concentrated extract - so a cautious approach is sensible. Keep to the serving: do not exceed the suggested amount, as higher doses have shown effects on the liver and signs of DNA damage in studies. Allergy: it is in the Malvaceae (mallow) family, so avoid it if you are sensitive to that family. Pregnancy and nursing: do NOT use it during pregnancy, and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding. Not a substitute for medical care: do not use it to self-treat urinary problems, hemorrhoids, worms, a liver condition or any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Indian Mallow (Abutilon Indicum) Seed is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
