Frequently Asked Questions about Jing Jie Extract
What is Jing Jie / Schizonepeta (Schizonepeta tenuifolia) herb extract?
Jing Jie is a liquid extract of the dried aerial herb of Schizonepeta tenuifolia, an aromatic plant of the mint family (Lamiaceae), also written botanically as Nepeta tenuifolia. In traditional Chinese herbalism it is called Jing Jie, and in the West it is sometimes marketed as "Japanese catnip" or "Japanese mint." This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. It is a whole-herb liquid extract carrying the herb's natural constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. Please note this is Schizonepeta tenuifolia - a different plant from true catnip (Nepeta cataria), which we sell separately - and please read the safety notes below, especially the notes on pregnancy and the liver.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Schizonepeta tenuifolia herb; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, giving it a milder taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is Jing Jie the same as catnip?
No - and this is a common mix-up because of the names. Jing Jie is Schizonepeta tenuifolia, sometimes called "Japanese catnip." True catnip is a different plant, Nepeta cataria - the herb famous for its effect on cats - which we sell as a separate product. The two are both in the mint family and were once classified in the same genus (Schizonepeta was formerly placed in Nepeta), which is where the shared "catnip" name comes from, but they are different species used differently in traditional practice. We label ours by its botanical name, Schizonepeta tenuifolia, so it is not confused with true catnip. If you are looking for the classic cat-attracting catnip, that is Nepeta cataria.
How do I use Jing Jie / Schizonepeta herb liquid extract?
Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to three times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because it is alcohol free, this glycerite can be taken directly or added to a cool drink. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Please read the safety information below before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Jing Jie right for everyone? Safety information.
Jing Jie (Schizonepeta tenuifolia) is an aromatic mint-family herb with a long traditional record and is generally well tolerated at sensible amounts, but there are a couple of important cautions. Like several mint-family plants, it naturally contains pulegone (the same compound found in pennyroyal), which in large amounts or with prolonged use may stress the liver - so keep strictly to the suggested serving, use it in short courses rather than continuously, and be cautious if you have a liver condition. Do NOT use during pregnancy, because pulegone-containing herbs are traditionally avoided in pregnancy, and avoid while nursing. Some sensitive individuals may notice skin sensitivity to sun or a rash; discontinue if that happens. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
