Kola (Cola nitida) - Nut, Alcohol-Free Liquid Extract
This is an alcohol-free glycerite (drops) of the dried nut (seed) of Cola nitida, a West African tree of the Malvaceae family; the seed is the well-known kola nut. Kola nut naturally contains caffeine (about 2 to 3 percent) along with theobromine, and has long been used in West Africa in social and cultural ceremonies.
- Botanical name: Cola nitida (Vent.) Schott and Endl. (kola nut, gbanja kola; Malvaceae)
- Plant part: Dried nut (seed)
- Also known as: kola nut, kolanut, gbanja kola
- Extract type: Alcohol-free glycerite (vegetable glycerin), cold-macerated
- Other ingredients: Vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
- Origin: Nut responsibly sourced from Brazil; prepared in the USA. Gluten free.
This is Cola nitida. We also sell a kola nut from Cola acuminata (the other main kola-nut species). It is a different plant from Guarana (Paullinia cupana), and - despite the similar name - it is NOT Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica), which contains no caffeine, nor bitter kola (Garcinia kola). Because it contains caffeine, please read the safety notes below.
Important safety information - please read before use
Kola nut contains caffeine. A few cautions are important.
- Caffeine effects: it can raise heart rate and blood pressure and cause restlessness, insomnia, anxiety, or an upset stomach in sensitive people - use it earlier in the day and do not exceed the suggested serving.
- Do NOT use if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, an irregular heartbeat, or an anxiety disorder.
- Do NOT combine with other caffeine sources, or with stimulant products or medicines.
- Pregnancy / nursing / children: avoid use during pregnancy and while nursing, and do not give it to children.
- Not for heavy or prolonged use: traditional heavy, long-term chewing of the whole nut has been associated with an increased risk of certain cancers of the digestive tract and mouth.
- If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.
