Frequently Asked Questions about Kudzu Extract
What is Kudzu (Pueraria lobata) root extract?
Kudzu is a fast-growing climbing vine in the legume family (Fabaceae), botanically named Pueraria lobata (also classified as Pueraria montana var. lobata). It is native to East Asia - China, Japan and Korea - where its large starchy root has been valued for centuries. In traditional Chinese herbalism the root is known as Ge Gen and is counted among the fifty fundamental herbs; in Japan the culinary starch pressed from the root is called kuzu. Our extract is made from the dried root of the plant, not from the leaves or the aggressive above-ground vine that has made kudzu famous as an invasive plant across the southeastern United States. Each batch is prepared from ethically sourced, wild-harvested raw material and is offered in two forms: a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite. This is a whole-root liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents - it is not an isolated or standardized single-compound product.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same wild-harvested Pueraria lobata root; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses a traditional blend of vegetable glycerine, alcohol and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal-clear water, giving it a naturally sweet taste that suits those who avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture if you prefer a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
What is in Kudzu root and what are its traditional names?
Kudzu root is best known botanically for its isoflavones - naturally occurring plant compounds including puerarin, daidzein and daidzin - along with the starch that is pressed into the culinary thickener known as kuzu. These isoflavones are simply a natural part of the root's chemistry; our extract preserves the plant's own spectrum of constituents rather than concentrating any single isolated compound. Across cultures the plant carries many names. In traditional Chinese herbalism the root is Ge Gen; in classical pharmacy references it appears as Radix Puerariae. It is also called Japanese arrowroot, and the food starch made from it is kuzu. The botanical name Pueraria lobata honours the 19th-century Swiss botanist Marc Nicolas Puerari, while "lobata" refers to the lobed shape of the leaves. Because the same word "kudzu" is used both for the invasive vine and for the traditional root herb, we label our product clearly by its botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion.
How do I use Kudzu liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Kudzu extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Kudzu root contains isoflavones, which are plant compounds with mild estrogen-like (phytoestrogen) activity, so it may not be appropriate for everyone. If you are pregnant or nursing, have a hormone-sensitive condition, take medications - including anticoagulants, methotrexate, tamoxifen, or medicines affected by alcohol - or have a history of liver concerns, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use kudzu as a substitute for professional care for alcohol use. Keep out of reach of children. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Kudzu (Pueraria Lobata) Root is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
