Important safety information - please read before use

Labrador tea contains natural neurotoxins and is not a gentle everyday herb.

  • Toxic compounds: it contains ledol (a poisonous terpene) and grayanotoxins (neurotoxins of the Rhododendron genus). Taken in excess it can cause increased urination, nausea, vomiting, dizziness and drowsiness, and in large amounts cramps, convulsions and, rarely, more serious harm.
  • Do not exceed the serving: keep to occasional rather than daily use, and remember that a concentrated extract is stronger than a cup of the traditional tea.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do NOT use it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Family / recreational: it is in the heath family (Ericaceae) / Rhododendron genus - avoid if you are sensitive to these, and do not use it for any recreational or mind-altering purpose.
  • Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Labrador Tea Extract
What is Labrador Tea (Rhododendron groenlandicum) leaf extract?
Labrador tea is a liquid extract of the dried leaf of Rhododendron groenlandicum, an aromatic shrub of the Ericaceae (heath) family that grows in northern bogs. You may know it under its former botanical name, Ledum groenlandicum - the genus Ledum has been merged into Rhododendron. Its leaves have long been brewed as a fragrant northern "tea." This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. It is important to know two things: this is bog Labrador tea (Rhododendron groenlandicum), the least toxic of the plants called "Labrador tea," and a different plant from marsh Labrador tea (Rhododendron tomentosum, formerly Ledum palustre), which is more toxic; and even so, Labrador tea contains natural neurotoxins (ledol and grayanotoxins), so it carries real safety cautions - please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Rhododendron groenlandicum leaf; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol; the tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method. The botanical inside is identical - and so are the safety cautions, which matter for this plant. A concentrated extract is stronger than a cup of the traditional tea, so keep to the serving. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is this the same as marsh Labrador tea, or safe like an ordinary tea?
Not quite. Several heath-family shrubs are called "Labrador tea." This product is bog Labrador tea, Rhododendron groenlandicum (formerly Ledum groenlandicum), which is the least toxic of them. Marsh Labrador tea is a different, more toxic species, Rhododendron tomentosum (formerly Ledum palustre) - do not confuse them. And even the milder bog Labrador tea is not an ordinary tea: like other plants in the Rhododendron genus it contains grayanotoxins (the same class of neurotoxin found in "mad honey" and in mountain laurel, Kalmia), plus a compound called ledol. Traditionally the tea is brewed below boiling and taken sparingly for this reason. We label ours clearly as Rhododendron groenlandicum so you know which plant you have - and so its cautions are clear.
How do I use Labrador Tea liquid extract?
Because this plant contains natural neurotoxins, use it sparingly. If you use it at all, a typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in water, no more than modestly and not daily over long periods, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner. Do NOT exceed the suggested serving - a concentrated extract is stronger than a cup of the tea. Do not use it if you are pregnant or nursing. Please read the safety information below in full before use, and keep it out of reach of children.
Is Labrador Tea safe? Important safety information.
Please read this carefully. Labrador tea is a traditional northern beverage, but it contains natural neurotoxins and is not a gentle everyday herb. Toxic compounds: it contains ledol (a poisonous terpene) and grayanotoxins (neurotoxins of the Rhododendron genus); taken in excess it can cause increased urination, nausea and vomiting, dizziness and drowsiness, and in large amounts cramps, convulsions and, rarely, more serious harm. Do NOT exceed the suggested serving, keep to occasional rather than daily use, and remember that a concentrated extract is stronger than a cup of the traditional tea. Pregnancy and nursing: do NOT use it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Family cautions: it is in the heath family (Ericaceae) and the Rhododendron genus - avoid it if you are sensitive to these. Do not use it for any recreational or mind-altering purpose. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
