Frequently Asked Questions about Ladybell Extract
What is Ladybell (Adenophora triphylla) root extract?
Ladybell is a liquid extract of the dried root of Adenophora triphylla, a bellflower of the Campanulaceae family known in traditional Chinese medicine as Nan Sha Shen (southern sha shen) and also called upright ladybell or sand-ginseng. Its root and leaves are edible, and the root has long been valued as a gentle tonic. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. Two things are worth knowing: this is Nan Sha Shen (Adenophora triphylla), a different plant from Bei Sha Shen (northern sha shen), which is Glehnia (Glehnia littoralis), and from the many other traditional "shen" roots - so it should not be confused with them; and although it is a gentle, edible tonic root, it carries a couple of specific cautions (a traditional incompatibility and pregnancy), so please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Adenophora triphylla root; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is Nan Sha Shen the same as Bei Sha Shen or the other "shen" roots?
No - the word "shen" appears in the names of many traditional roots that are completely different plants, so it helps to be clear. This product is Nan Sha Shen ("southern sha shen"), the root of Adenophora triphylla, a bellflower in the Campanulaceae family. Bei Sha Shen ("northern sha shen") is a different plant, Glehnia littoralis, in the carrot family (Apiaceae) - we sell it separately as Glehnia (also American Silvertop). The two "sha shen" are used similarly in tradition but they are botanically unrelated. Other "shen" roots are different plants again: ginseng is Ren Shen (Panax), Xuan Shen is Scrophularia, Dan Shen is Salvia, and Ku Shen is Sophora. We label ours clearly as ladybell / Nan Sha Shen (Adenophora triphylla) so it is not confused with Glehnia or with the other shen roots.
How do I use Ladybell liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml), up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner, diluted in a little water, tea or juice. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Because ladybell has a traditional incompatibility and a pregnancy caution, please read the safety information below before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Ladybell right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Ladybell (Nan Sha Shen) is a gentle, edible tonic root with a good safety record, but a few cautions are important. Traditional incompatibility: in traditional practice it is considered incompatible with Li Lu (Veratrum), which is a toxic plant, so do not combine them. Pregnancy and nursing: do NOT use it during pregnancy, and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding. Allergy: it is in the bellflower family (Campanulaceae), so avoid it if you are sensitive to that family. Not a substitute for medical care: do not use it to self-treat a cough, a lung or throat problem, anxiety or any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Ladybell (Adenophora Triphylla) Root is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
