Important safety information - please read before use

Lemon thyme is an everyday culinary herb, but a concentrated extract is stronger than kitchen use.

  • Pregnancy / nursing: do NOT use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding - thyme has traditionally been avoided in pregnancy.
  • Allergy: lemon thyme is in the Lamiaceae (mint) family - avoid it if you are allergic or sensitive to thyme or other mint-family herbs.
  • Aromatic oils: thyme naturally contains aromatic compounds such as thymol and citral that are fine in food amounts but can irritate the mouth or stomach in a concentrate - keep to the suggested serving and to short-term use, and stop if it does not agree with you.
  • Do not give it to infants or young children.
  • Contains alcohol. If you take any medication (including blood thinners) or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Lemon Thyme Extract
What is Lemon Thyme (Thymus x citriodorus) leaf extract?
Lemon thyme is a liquid extract of the dried leaf of Thymus x citriodorus, the lemon-scented thyme of the Lamiaceae (mint) family. It is a small aromatic shrub with dark green leaves and pale pink summer flowers, and it is grown mainly as a culinary and fragrance herb: its leaves carry a bright, lemony version of the familiar thyme aroma, from natural aromatic compounds such as geraniol, citral and thymol. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. Two things are worth knowing: this is lemon thyme (Thymus x citriodorus), which is a different plant from common thyme (Thymus vulgaris, which we sell separately) and from other lemon-scented herbs such as lemon balm, lemon verbena and lemongrass; and although thyme is an everyday kitchen herb, a concentrated extract is stronger than culinary use, so please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Thymus x citriodorus leaf; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is lemon thyme the same as common thyme or lemon balm?
No - several herbs are easy to mix up, so it helps to be clear. Lemon thyme is Thymus x citriodorus, a lemon-scented thyme; most botanical authorities treat it as a hybrid (a cross of thyme species), which is why you may see it written Thymus x citriodorus with a multiplication sign. Common thyme is a different species, Thymus vulgaris - the standard kitchen and medicinal thyme, richer in thymol - and we sell it separately. Then there are the other lemon-scented herbs that share only the citrus aroma, not the plant: lemon balm is Melissa officinalis (also mint family), lemon verbena is Aloysia citrodora, and lemongrass is Cymbopogon, a grass. These are all different plants from different genera. We label ours clearly as lemon thyme (Thymus x citriodorus), the leaf, so it is not confused with common thyme or with the lemon-scented balms, verbenas and grasses.
How do I use Lemon Thyme liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml), up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner, diluted in a little water, tea or juice. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water or tea softens the flavor. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and because a concentrated extract is stronger than culinary thyme, keep to short-term use. Please read the safety information below before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Lemon Thyme right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Lemon thyme is an everyday culinary herb and is generally well tolerated as a food, but a concentrated liquid extract is stronger than kitchen use, so a few cautions matter. Pregnancy and nursing: do not use it during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, as thyme has traditionally been avoided in pregnancy. Allergy: lemon thyme belongs to the Lamiaceae (mint) family, so avoid it if you are allergic or sensitive to thyme or other mint-family herbs. Essential-oil compounds: thyme naturally contains aromatic oils such as thymol and citral, which are fine in food amounts but can irritate the mouth or stomach in a concentrate, so keep to the suggested serving and to short-term use, and stop if it does not agree with you. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication - including blood thinners - or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
