Lotus Plumule (Nelumbo nucifera) - Liquid Extract Tincture

This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of the dried plumule of Nelumbo nucifera - the small bitter green embryo, or "heart," found inside the lotus seed. In traditional Chinese practice it is known as Lian Zi Xin. It has a long history as a food-grade herbal tea ingredient.

  • Botanical name: Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn. (sacred lotus; Nelumbonaceae)
  • Plant part: Dried plumule (the heart / embryo of the lotus seed)
  • Also known as: Lian Zi Xin, lotus seed heart, lotus embryo, Plumula Nelumbinis
  • Extract type: Alcohol tincture (cold maceration in organic alcohol)
  • Other ingredients: Organic alcohol, crystal clear purified water
  • Origin: Lotus responsibly sourced from Indonesia; prepared in the USA. Gluten free.

This is the plumule - a different part from our Lotus Seed (Lian Zi), Lotus Leaf (He Ye), Lotus Stamen (Lian Xu), and lotus root and flower products, which all come from the same plant (Nelumbo nucifera) but from different parts. It is also completely different from Blue Lotus (Nymphaea caerulea), an unrelated water-lily. Please read the safety notes below.

Important safety information - please read before use

This is a concentrated tincture of the most alkaloid-rich part of the lotus. As an occasional tea the lotus plumule is considered low in toxicity, but a concentrated extract deserves a thoughtful approach.

  • Contains active plant alkaloids: the plumule is naturally rich in alkaloids such as neferine and liensinine. In laboratory studies these can affect heart-muscle contraction and lower blood pressure.
  • Heart / blood pressure / sedatives: if you have a heart condition or low blood pressure, or take medication for your heart rhythm or blood pressure, or any sedative medication, talk to a qualified healthcare practitioner before use.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do NOT use - lotus alkaloids have shown hormonal and anti-fertility activity in animal studies.
  • Not for children.
  • Bitter and cooling: keep to the suggested serving and short-term use; it may not suit people with weak digestion.
  • Contains alcohol. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Lotus Extract
What is lotus plumule (Nelumbo nucifera)?
Lotus plumule is the small green embryo, or "heart", found inside the lotus seed of Nelumbo nucifera. In traditional Chinese practice it is called Lian Zi Xin. It is intensely bitter and has long been used as a food-grade herbal tea ingredient. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol from the dried plumule, responsibly sourced from Indonesia and prepared in the USA. Note two things: this is the plumule (the heart of the seed), a different part from our Lotus Seed, Leaf, Stamen, Root and flower products; and it is completely different from Blue Lotus (Nymphaea caerulea), an unrelated water-lily. Please read the safety notes below carefully.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same lotus plumule; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with purified water, the classic cold-maceration method that yields a more concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
How do I use this extract?
A common serving is about 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of juice or water, up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Shake well first; because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. This tincture is more concentrated than the glycerite. Because the plumule is very bitter and cooling, keep to the suggested serving and use it short-term, and read the safety notes below before internal use.
What does it taste like and what is in it?
Lotus plumule is one of the most bitter parts of the plant. This tincture contains lotus plumule in an organic alcohol and purified water base, with no artificial colors. It is gluten free.
Is it safe? Any precautions?
Please read this carefully. As a traditional tea, lotus plumule has a long history of use and is low in toxicity at ordinary amounts, but this is a concentrated extract of the most alkaloid-rich part of the plant, so please use it thoughtfully. Because it is strongly bitter and cooling, keep to the suggested serving and short-term use, and it may not suit people with weak digestion. The plumule naturally contains active plant alkaloids (such as neferine and liensinine) that in laboratory studies can affect heart-muscle contraction and lower blood pressure - so if you have a heart condition or low blood pressure, or take medication for your heart rhythm or blood pressure, or any sedative medication, talk to a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do NOT use if pregnant or nursing, as lotus alkaloids have shown hormonal and anti-fertility activity in animal studies, and do not give it to children. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
