What is Mace (Myristica fragrans) whole arils extract?

Mace is a liquid extract of the whole arils of Myristica fragrans - the bright red, lacy covering that grows around the nutmeg seed. It is a warm spice of the Myristicaceae family, known in India as Javitri (or Jatipatri) and by the Latin name Macis. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. Mace and nutmeg come from the same tree but are different parts (mace is the aril, nutmeg is the seed), which is why we list them separately. One thing matters a great deal for safety: like nutmeg, mace contains myristicin and elemicin, compounds that are toxic and psychoactive in large amounts, so it must never be taken in excess - please read the safety notes below.

What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?

Both are liquid extracts of the same Myristica fragrans arils; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The mace inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.

Is mace the same as nutmeg?

They come from the same tree but are two different spices. Mace - ours - is the aril, the red lacy net that wraps the seed of Myristica fragrans. Nutmeg is the seed itself, which we list separately. They taste similar but not identical, and mace is generally the milder-flavored of the two. Importantly, both contain the same active compounds (myristicin and elemicin), and mace's arils can actually contain a higher proportion of myristicin than the nutmeg seed - so the same "do not take in excess" caution applies to both, if not more so for mace. We label ours clearly as mace (Myristica fragrans) whole arils. Note: this is the spice, not the "Mace" self-defense pepper spray, which is an unrelated trademark.

How do I use Mace liquid extract?

Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. It is very important not to exceed the suggested serving, because mace is toxic and mind-altering in large amounts. Keep to short-term use.
