Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) - Flower, Liquid Extract Tincture

This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of the dried flower of Filipendula ulmaria (once classified as Spiraea ulmaria; meadowsweet / queen of the meadow / bridewort, Rosaceae family).

  • Botanical name: Filipendula ulmaria (L.) Maxim. (syn. Spiraea ulmaria)
  • Plant part: Dried flower
  • Extract type: Alcohol tincture (organic alcohol)
  • Other ingredients: Organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
  • Gluten free. Suggested use: 20-30 drops in 2 oz water

Meadowsweet is a natural salicylate herb - the name "Aspirin" was derived from its old genus name (Spiraea). Like white willow (Salix alba), it naturally contains salicylates, so please read the safety notes below. It is "queen of the meadow" in the British sense (Filipendula) - not American gravel root.

Important safety information - please read before use

Meadowsweet contains salicylates (the aspirin family). It is not for everyone.

  • Aspirin/salicylate allergy: do NOT use if you are allergic or sensitive to aspirin or salicylates.
  • Blood thinners / NSAIDs: do NOT use with anticoagulants such as warfarin, or alongside NSAID pain relievers - risk of bleeding. Avoid before surgery.
  • Asthma: use caution or avoid - meadowsweet extracts can trigger bronchospasm in sensitive people.
  • Children with fever: do NOT give to children who have a fever or viral illness - salicylates are linked to Reye''s syndrome.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do NOT use - meadowsweet has shown activity on the uterus.
  • Contains alcohol. Keep to the suggested serving; do not exceed it. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Meadowsweet Extract
What is Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) flower extract?
Meadowsweet is a liquid extract of the dried flower of Filipendula ulmaria (once classified as Spiraea ulmaria), a plant of the Rosaceae family also known as queen of the meadow or bridewort. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. It is a whole-flower liquid extract carrying the flower's natural constituents, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. One important point up front: meadowsweet naturally contains salicylates (the same chemical family as aspirin) - in fact, the name "Aspirin" was derived from the plant's old genus name, Spiraea, because early aspirin was made using salicin from meadowsweet. Because of the salicylate content, several safety cautions apply (aspirin allergy, blood thinners, asthma, children, pregnancy) - please read them carefully below before use.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Filipendula ulmaria flower; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical, and the same salicylate safety notes apply to both. Please read them before use.
Is "queen of the meadow" the same as meadowsweet, and how does it relate to willow?
Two useful clarifications. First, names: this plant, Filipendula ulmaria, is called both "meadowsweet" and "queen of the meadow" in Britain - they are the same plant, and we label ours as meadowsweet to be clear. Be aware, though, that in American herbalism "queen of the meadow" is sometimes used for a completely different plant, gravel root (Eupatorium purpureum); ours is the Filipendula. Second, willow: meadowsweet and white willow (Salix alba) are both natural salicylate herbs - the aspirin story involves both - so the same aspirin-related safety cautions apply. Note that "small flower willow" (Epilobium parviflorum), despite the name, is a different, non-salicylate plant (a willowherb), not related here.
How do I use Meadowsweet flower liquid extract?
Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Please read the safety information below before use - it is important for this product. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Meadowsweet right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully - meadowsweet contains salicylates (the aspirin family), so it is not for everyone. Do NOT use it if you are allergic or sensitive to aspirin or salicylates. Do NOT use it if you take blood thinners or anticoagulants such as warfarin, or if you already take NSAID pain relievers, as the combination can increase the risk of bleeding; and avoid it before surgery. If you have asthma, use caution or avoid it, because meadowsweet extracts have been shown to trigger bronchospasm in sensitive people. Do NOT give it to children who have a fever or a viral illness, because salicylates are linked to Reye's syndrome. Do NOT use during pregnancy or while nursing, as meadowsweet has shown activity on the uterus. Keep to the suggested serving and do not exceed it. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
