Frequently Asked Questions about Niu Xi (Huai) Extract
What is Niu Xi (Achyranthes bidentata) root extract?
Niu Xi is the traditional Chinese name for the root of Achyranthes bidentata, a perennial herb in the amaranth family (Amaranthaceae). More precisely it is called Huai Niu Xi, and in English it is known as "ox knee," a name that comes from the swollen, knee-like joints along its stem. Native to China, it grows 30 to 100 cm high. Our extract is made from the dried root and offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from ethically sourced, wild-harvested raw material. This is a whole-root liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Achyranthes bidentata root; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the root's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is Huai Niu Xi the same as Chuan Niu Xi?
Not quite - this is a useful distinction in traditional Chinese herbalism. The name "Niu Xi" (ox knee) is used for more than one plant. Our product is Huai Niu Xi, made from Achyranthes bidentata. There is also Chuan Niu Xi, which comes from a different plant, Cyathula officinalis. They are related in traditional use but are distinct botanical sources, so it matters which one you have. Our product is specifically the Achyranthes bidentata root (Huai Niu Xi). We label it clearly by botanical name (Achyranthes bidentata), TCM name (Huai Niu Xi) and plant part (root) so there is no confusion with Chuan Niu Xi.
How do I use Niu Xi liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Niu Xi extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Niu Xi is not appropriate for everyone. It is traditionally avoided during pregnancy, so do not use it if you are pregnant. If you are nursing, take any medication, or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Niu Xi (Huai) (Achyranthes Bidentata) Root is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
