Orris (Iris germanica) - Root/Rhizome, Alcohol-Free Liquid Extract

This is an alcohol-free (glycerite) liquid extract of the dried root (rhizome) of Iris germanica (bearded iris; Iridaceae family). The aged orris rhizome is prized for its natural violet-like scent (from irones) and is a classic perfumery and aromatic material.

  • Botanical name: Iris germanica L. (orris; also from I. pallida / I. florentina)
  • Plant part: Dried rhizome ("orris root")
  • Extract type: Alcohol-free vegetable-glycerin glycerite
  • Other ingredients: Vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
  • Gluten free. Chiefly an aromatic / cosmetic material

This is orris (Iris germanica) - a different plant from blue flag (Iris versicolor), the medicinal iris we sell separately, and from ornamental garden irises. Responsibly sourced. Please read the safety notes below.

Important safety information - please read before use

Orris is chiefly an aromatic and cosmetic material. External and cosmetic use is generally safe, but there are important cautions for internal use.

  • Internal use is traditionally discouraged: iris rhizome (including orris) contains irritant compounds such as irisin and can cause stomach upset and nausea; the fresh plant is a strong irritant.
  • Recognized allergen: orris root is a well-known allergen and skin sensitizer (it has caused contact dermatitis) - avoid it if you are sensitive to iris or orris.
  • Not for infants: do NOT use it for teething, and do not give it to infants or young children.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do NOT use - some irises may stimulate the uterus.
  • Pets: keep away from dogs and cats - irises are toxic to them.
  • Keep to the suggested serving; keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Orris Extract
What is Orris (Iris germanica) root extract?
Orris is a liquid extract of the dried root - botanically the rhizome - of Iris germanica, the bearded iris of the Iridaceae family. Orris root is famous in perfumery: when the rhizome is dried and aged, it develops a delicate violet-like scent (from compounds called irones), and it has long been used as a fragrance fixative and as a base in natural toothpastes, sachets and potpourri. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. Two important points: this is orris (Iris germanica), which is a different plant from blue flag (Iris versicolor, the medicinal iris we sell separately) and from ornamental garden irises; and orris is best known as an aromatic and cosmetic material - internal use of iris is traditionally discouraged, and orris is a recognized allergen. Please read the safety notes below carefully.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Iris germanica rhizome; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, giving it a milder taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is orris the same as blue flag or garden iris?
No - it helps to be clear, because several plants are "iris." Orris is Iris germanica (and related orris species, Iris pallida and Iris florentina), and the part is the aromatic rhizome used mainly in perfumery. Blue flag is a different species, Iris versicolor, the American medicinal iris - we sell it separately, and it too should be treated with care. And the tall bearded irises grown in gardens are ornamentals, not this product. All irises share a family trait worth knowing: the fresh rhizome is irritating, and internal use is traditionally discouraged. We label ours clearly as orris (Iris germanica) so it is not confused with blue flag or garden iris.
How do I use Orris root liquid extract?
Orris is chiefly an aromatic and cosmetic material rather than an internal remedy. If you use it, shake well first; a typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of water, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. The alcohol-free glycerite can be added to a cool drink; for the alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Because iris can irritate and is a known allergen, please read the safety information below before any internal use, and do not use it for infants. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Orris right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Orris is prized as a fragrance and is generally safe for external and cosmetic use, but a few cautions are important. First, internal use: iris rhizome (including orris) contains irritant compounds such as irisin, and internal use is traditionally discouraged - it can cause stomach upset and nausea, and the fresh plant is a strong irritant. Second, allergy: orris root is a well-recognized allergen and sensitizer that has caused contact dermatitis, so avoid it if you are sensitive to iris or orris. Do NOT use it for teething or give it to infants or young children. Do NOT use during pregnancy or while nursing, as some irises may stimulate the uterus. Please also keep it away from pets - irises are toxic to dogs and cats. Keep to the suggested serving and do not exceed it. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
