Pashanbhed (Bergenia ciliata) - Root, Alcohol-Free Liquid Extract

This is an alcohol-free glycerite (drops) of the dried root of Bergenia ciliata, a Himalayan plant of the Saxifragaceae family. On older labels and in the trade it is also written Saxifraga ligulata or Bergenia ligulata, which are synonyms of the same plant.

  • Botanical name: Bergenia ciliata (syn. Bergenia ligulata, Saxifraga ligulata; Saxifragaceae)
  • Plant part: Dried root
  • Also known as: Pashanabheda, Pakhanbhed; a traditional Ayurvedic Himalayan herb
  • Extract type: Alcohol-free glycerite (vegetable glycerin), cold-macerated
  • Other ingredients: Vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
  • Origin: Root responsibly sourced from India (Himalayan region); prepared in the USA. Gluten free.

The Sanskrit name Pashanbhed is often translated as "stone breaker" - this reflects its traditional folk name, not a proven effect. The name has historically been applied to several different plants; ours is the Himalayan Bergenia ciliata. It is different from our Polapola (Aerva lanata), also used regionally as a Pashanbhed, and from Chanca Piedra (Phyllanthus niruri) and Gravel Root (Eupatorium purpureum). Please read the safety notes below.

Important safety information - please read before use

Frequently Asked Questions about Pashanbhed Extract
What is Pashanbhed (Bergenia ciliata) root extract?
Pashanbhed is a liquid extract of the dried root of Bergenia ciliata, a Himalayan plant of the Saxifragaceae family. On older labels and in the trade it is also written Saxifraga ligulata or Bergenia ligulata, which are synonyms of the same plant. Pashanbhed is a traditional Ayurvedic herb from the Himalayan region; its Sanskrit name is often translated as "stone breaker", which reflects its traditional folk name rather than a proven effect. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite, cold-macerated from root responsibly sourced from India and prepared in the USA. Please read the safety notes below carefully.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Pashanbhed root; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, giving it a milder taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol, the classic cold-maceration method that yields a more concentrated extract. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Which Pashanbhed is this, and how is it different from your other similar herbs?
The name Pashanbhed has historically been applied to several different plants across regions of India. Ours is Bergenia ciliata (Saxifraga ligulata), the Himalayan plant most often accepted as Pashanbhed. This is different from our Polapola, which is Aerva lanata, a plant also used regionally as a Pashanbhed. It is also different from Chanca Piedra (Phyllanthus niruri) and from Gravel Root (Eupatorium purpureum), which are separate plants. We label each by its botanical name so they are not confused.
How do I use Pashanbhed liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is about 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of juice or water, up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. This alcohol-free glycerite has a milder taste and can be added to a cool drink. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and read the safety information below before use.
Is Pashanbhed right for everyone? Safety information.
