Important safety information - please read before use

Black pepper is a common food spice, but a concentrated extract calls for a few cautions.

  • Medication interactions: black pepper naturally contains piperine, which can slow the way the body breaks down and clears many medicines (it affects liver enzymes and a drug transporter) and can raise the blood levels of some drugs - if you take any medication, especially one with a narrow safe range such as certain seizure, heart or blood-thinning medicines, consult your practitioner before use.
  • Stomach: large or concentrated amounts may irritate the stomach - keep to the suggested serving.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: culinary amounts are one thing, but do not use a concentrated extract during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
  • Do not give it to infants or young children.
  • If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Peppercorn Extract
What is Peppercorn (Piper nigrum) fruit extract?
Peppercorn is a liquid extract of the dried fruit of Piper nigrum, the black pepper vine of the Piperaceae family and one of the world's most familiar culinary spices. The peppercorn is the small dried fruit (drupe); black, white and green peppers all come from this same fruit, simply harvested and processed differently. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. Two things are worth knowing: this is peppercorn (Piper nigrum), the same plant sold as black pepper, and a different plant from long pepper (Piper longum), cubeb (Piper cubeba) and especially kava (Piper methysticum), as well as from peppermint and the chili peppers, which are not peppers of this genus at all; and black pepper naturally contains piperine, a compound that can affect how the body absorbs medicines, so please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Piper nigrum fruit; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, giving it a milder, naturally sweet taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is peppercorn the same as black pepper, long pepper or kava?
It helps to be clear, because several "peppers" are very different plants. Peppercorn and black pepper are the same thing - both are the dried fruit of Piper nigrum - and white and green pepper are that same fruit, just harvested or processed differently. Long pepper is a different species, Piper longum (also called pippali), and cubeb is Piper cubeba - both are relatives with their own character. Kava is Piper methysticum: although it is in the same genus, it is a very different plant used quite differently, so do not confuse the two. Peppermint (Mentha x piperita) is not a pepper at all - it only shares the word - and the chili, bell and cayenne "peppers" are Capsicum, a completely unrelated genus. We label ours clearly as peppercorn (Piper nigrum), the fruit, so it is not confused with long pepper, cubeb, kava, peppermint or chili.
How do I use Peppercorn liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml), up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner, diluted in a little water, tea or juice. The alcohol-free glycerite has a milder taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and remember that a concentrated extract is stronger than the pepper used in cooking. Because black pepper can affect medicines, please read the safety information below before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Peppercorn right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Black pepper is a common food spice with a good safety record in ordinary culinary amounts, but a concentrated extract calls for a few cautions. Medication interactions: black pepper naturally contains piperine, which can slow the way the body breaks down and clears many medicines (it affects liver enzymes and a drug transporter), so it can raise the levels of some drugs in the blood - if you take any medication, especially one with a narrow safe range such as certain seizure, heart or blood-thinning medicines, consult your practitioner before use. Stomach: large or concentrated amounts may irritate the stomach, so keep to the suggested serving. Pregnancy and nursing: culinary amounts are one thing, but do not use a concentrated extract during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
