  • Pregnancy / nursing: do NOT use it during pregnancy, and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding.
  • Allergy: it is in the Amaranthaceae family - avoid if you are sensitive to that family.
  • Contains alcohol. Do not use it to self-treat an eye condition or any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Plumed Cockscomb Extract
What is Plumed Cockscomb / Qing Xiang Zi (Celosia argentea) seed extract?
Plumed cockscomb is a liquid extract of the dried seed of Celosia argentea, a plant of the Amaranthaceae (amaranth) family, known in traditional Chinese medicine as Qing Xiang Zi and also called silver cockscomb or quail grass; its leaves are eaten as a vegetable called Lagos spinach. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. Two things are worth knowing: this is the seed (Qing Xiang Zi) of Celosia argentea, which is a different part and traditional use from the crested cockscomb flower (Ji Guan Hua, Celosia cristata) and from the edible Lagos-spinach leaf of the same plant; and this seed contains a compound called celosiaol that dilates the pupil of the eye - so it carries an important eye-related caution (it must not be used by anyone with glaucoma) - please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Celosia argentea seed; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is plumed cockscomb seed the same as cockscomb flower (Ji Guan Hua) or Lagos spinach?
No - the same plant is used in different ways, so it helps to be clear. Plumed cockscomb seed is Qing Xiang Zi, the seed of Celosia argentea. The crested cockscomb flower is Ji Guan Hua, from Celosia cristata (which botanists now often treat as a variety of Celosia argentea) - it is the flower and is used traditionally in quite a different way (for bleeding), not the same as the seed. And Lagos spinach (or quail grass) is the leafy green of the same Celosia argentea plant, eaten as a vegetable. So "cockscomb" and "celosia" can mean the seed, the flower or the leaf depending on the product. We label ours clearly as plumed cockscomb / Qing Xiang Zi (Celosia argentea) seed so it is not confused with the flower or the leaf.
How do I use Plumed Cockscomb liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml), up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner, diluted in a little water, tea or juice. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Because this seed affects the eyes (it can dilate the pupil), please read the safety information below before use - and do not use it if you have glaucoma. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Plumed Cockscomb right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Plumed cockscomb seed (Qing Xiang Zi) is considered a gentle, non-toxic herb in tradition, but it has one specific and important caution. Eyes and glaucoma: it contains celosiaol, a compound that dilates the pupil (a mydriatic effect), so it must NOT be used by anyone who has glaucoma or who takes medication for glaucoma; it may also cause temporary blurred vision, so take care with tasks like driving. Liver and kidney: in traditional use it is avoided by people with what is described as liver or kidney weakness - if in doubt, ask a practitioner. Pregnancy and nursing: do NOT use it during pregnancy, and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding. Allergy: it is in the Amaranthaceae family, so avoid it if you are sensitive to that family. Do not use it to self-treat an eye condition or any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
