Important safety information - please read before use

Psyllium is a common food-grade fiber, but a few cautions are important.

  • Allergy: psyllium is a recognized allergen and has caused serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis and asthma, in sensitized people - do NOT use it if you are allergic to psyllium or to seeds.
  • Take with plenty of fluid: psyllium absorbs water and swells - always take it with a full glass of water, and do NOT use it if you have difficulty swallowing, a narrowing of the gut, or any bowel obstruction, because of the risk of choking or blockage.
  • Medications: psyllium can reduce how well the body absorbs medicines, so take it well apart from any medication (for example, two hours before or after) and consult your practitioner.
  • Blood sugar: psyllium may lower blood sugar - monitor closely and seek advice if you take diabetes medication.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do not use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding without professional advice, and do not give it to young children.
  • If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Psyllium Extract
What is Psyllium (Plantago ovata) seed extract?
Psyllium is a liquid extract of the dried seed of Plantago ovata, known as blond psyllium, Indian psyllium or ispaghula, a plant of the Plantaginaceae family. Psyllium seed and its husk are among the best-known plant sources of soluble fiber (mucilage), and the seed is a traditional botanical taken by the drop in this preparation. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. Two things are worth knowing up front. First, this is the psyllium seed (Plantago ovata): it is a different part from our Psyllium Husk, and a different plant from Che Qian Zi (Plantago asiatica) and Plantain (Plantago major) leaf, which we sell separately. Second, psyllium is a recognized allergen and, in its bulk form, swells with water, so please read the safety notes below before use. Note that a few drops of a liquid extract do not provide the fiber bulk of a spoonful of psyllium husk powder.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Plantago ovata seed; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, giving it a milder taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is psyllium seed the same as psyllium husk or plantain?
No - several psyllium and plantain products are easy to mix up, so it helps to be clear. Psyllium seed is the whole seed of Plantago ovata (blond psyllium, ispaghula); psyllium husk is the outer seed coat of the same kind of plant, and it is the husk that is most often sold as a bulk fiber powder - we list it separately as Psyllium Husk. Blond psyllium (Plantago ovata) is also different from black or French psyllium (Plantago afra, sometimes written Plantago psyllium), a related species. Then there are the other members of the plantain family we sell: Che Qian Zi is the seed of Plantago asiatica (an Asian species), and Plantain is the leaf of Plantago major - different species and, in the case of plantain, a different part. And note that Water Plantain (Ze Xie, Alisma) is not a Plantago at all. We label ours clearly as psyllium seed (Plantago ovata) so it is not confused with the husk, with black psyllium, or with the plantain leaf and seed products.
How do I use Psyllium seed liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml), up to three times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner, diluted in a full glass of water, tea or juice. Always take it with plenty of fluid. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Because psyllium can affect how the body absorbs medicines, take it well apart from any medications (for example, two hours before or after). Please read the safety information below before use, especially if you have any difficulty swallowing. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Psyllium right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Psyllium is a common food-grade fiber, but a few cautions are important. Allergy: psyllium is a recognized allergen and has caused serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis and asthma, in sensitized people - do NOT use it if you are allergic to psyllium or to seeds. Swelling and swallowing: psyllium absorbs water and swells, so always take it with plenty of fluid, and do NOT use it if you have difficulty swallowing, a narrowing of the gut, or any bowel obstruction, because of the risk of choking or blockage. Medications: psyllium can reduce how well the body absorbs medicines, so take it well apart from any medication and consult your practitioner. Blood sugar: psyllium may lower blood sugar, so monitor closely and seek advice if you take diabetes medication. Do NOT use during pregnancy or while nursing without professional advice, and do not give it to young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
