Typha (Typha Angustifolia) is an aquatic perennial marsh herb in the Typhaceae family that can reach up to 3 m in height. It grows throughout the Northern hemisphere mainly on brackish soil. The sword-shaped leaves are narrow, flat and about 3’-6’ tall. Each vegetative shoot produces about 12-16 leaves. As the plant matures, there appear stalks with brown flowering heads at their top. These flower heads are sausage-shaped. The creeping roots are hard, rhizomatous and about 27” long. *

Important safety information - please read before use

Cattail pollen (Pu Huang) is gentle and low in toxicity, but it has two specific and important cautions.

  • Pregnancy: research shows that Pu Huang can stimulate contractions of the uterus, so it must NOT be used during pregnancy, as it may risk miscarriage or premature labor. Consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding.
  • Blood thinning: in tradition Pu Huang is described as invigorating the blood, so it may add to the effect of blood-thinning or anti-clotting medicines (such as warfarin, heparin, aspirin or clopidogrel). If you take any of these, have a bleeding or clotting disorder, or are due to have surgery, do not use it without medical advice.
  • Overuse: taking more than the suggested serving may cause mild nausea or loss of appetite - keep to the serving.
  • Contains alcohol. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Typha Extract
What is Typha / Pu Huang (Typha angustifolia) pollen extract?
Typha is a liquid extract of the dried pollen of Typha angustifolia, the narrowleaf cattail, a wetland plant of the Typhaceae family; the pollen is known in traditional Chinese medicine as Pu Huang (Pollen Typhae) and in English as cattail pollen. Cattail is also called bulrush or lesser reedmace. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. Two things are worth knowing up front: this pollen (Pu Huang) has an important pregnancy caution and a note for anyone on blood-thinning medication, both explained in the safety section below; and it should not be confused with the unrelated plants that happen to share the botanical species name angustifolia, such as Echinacea angustifolia, Senna (Cassia angustifolia) or Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia).
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Typha angustifolia pollen; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The pollen inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is Typha the same as Pu Huang or cattail pollen?
Yes - they are the same thing under different names. Typha is the botanical genus name; Pu Huang is the traditional Chinese medicine name for the pollen; and cattail pollen is the common English name. All three refer to the pollen of Typha angustifolia (narrowleaf cattail). You may also see the pharmacopeial name Pollen Typhae. So if you have seen this listed as Typha, as Pu Huang or as cattail pollen, it is the one and the same pollen. Note that a closely related species, Typha latifolia (broadleaf cattail), is also used as a source of Pu Huang; ours is the narrowleaf species. We simply label it clearly so the names are not confusing.
How do I use Typha liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Because of the pregnancy and blood-thinning cautions below, please read the safety information before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Typha right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Cattail pollen (Pu Huang) is considered a gentle, low-toxicity herb in tradition, but it has two specific and important cautions. Pregnancy: research shows that Pu Huang can stimulate contractions of the uterus, so it must NOT be used during pregnancy, as it may risk miscarriage or premature labor; consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding. Blood thinning: in tradition Pu Huang is described as invigorating the blood, so it may add to the effect of blood-thinning or anti-clotting medicines (such as warfarin, heparin, aspirin or clopidogrel) - if you take any of these, have a bleeding or clotting disorder, or are due to have surgery, do not use it without medical advice. In traditional terms it is also not suited to bleeding that is not due to blood stasis. Overuse may cause mild nausea or loss of appetite, so keep to the suggested serving. Do not use it to self-treat bleeding, menstrual or circulation problems - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Typha (Typha Angustifolia) Pollen is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
