What is Guar / Guar Gum (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba) extract?
Guar is a liquid extract prepared from guar gum, the gum (galactomannan) from the seed of Cyamopsis tetragonoloba, the cluster bean, a legume of the Fabaceae family. Guar gum is widely used as a food thickener (additive E412) and is a soluble dietary fiber. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. Two things matter for safety: guar gum swells strongly in water, so it must be taken with plenty of liquid and avoided by anyone with narrowing of the esophagus or intestine; and it can slow the absorption of some medicines. It is a completely different plant from guarana (Paullinia cupana). Please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Cyamopsis tetragonoloba guar gum; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, giving a milder carrier for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The material inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both.
Is guar the same as guarana?
No - these are completely different plants that only sound alike. Guar is Cyamopsis tetragonoloba, the cluster bean, a legume whose seed gum (guar gum) is a soluble fiber and food thickener. Guarana is Paullinia cupana, an Amazonian plant whose seeds are rich in caffeine and used as a stimulant - we sell that separately. They are unrelated, from different plant families, and have very different effects. We label ours clearly as Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (guar gum) so it is not confused with guarana.
How do I use Guar liquid extract?
Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Take it with a full glass of water, because guar gum swells with liquid. Do not exceed the suggested serving. If you take any medication, take it separately from this product (at least an hour apart), since guar gum can slow drug absorption. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.

Please read this carefully. Swelling and obstruction: guar gum absorbs water and swells many times its size, so it must always be taken with plenty of liquid; do NOT use it if you have any narrowing or blockage of the esophagus, stomach or intestine, or if you have difficulty swallowing - concentrated guar gum has caused choking and gut obstruction when taken with too little fluid. Medications: guar gum can slow or reduce the absorption of some medicines (including digoxin, metformin, penicillin, glyburide and acetaminophen), so take any medication at least an hour apart from this product. Blood sugar: it may lower blood sugar, so use caution if you have diabetes or take blood-sugar-lowering medication. Digestive: it may cause gas or bloating, especially at first. Pregnancy and nursing: as a precaution do not use concentrated guar extract during pregnancy, and avoid it while breastfeeding. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not give it to infants or young children. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Store as directed on the label. Keep out of reach of children.
