Frequently Asked Questions about Purslane Extract
What is Purslane (Portulaca oleracea)?
Purslane is a succulent annual plant of the family Portulacaceae, botanically Portulaca oleracea. It grows worldwide, often as a common garden volunteer, and it is edible - its slightly tangy leaves and stems are eaten as a leafy green in salads and cooking in many cuisines. In traditional Chinese herbalism it is known as Ma Chi Xian. The part used here is the aerial parts (leaves and stems). Our extract is offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from ethically sourced raw material, using cold maceration to preserve the plant's natural constituents such as vitamins, minerals and fatty acids. This is a whole-herb liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Portulaca oleracea aerial parts; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the herb's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this edible purslane or the ornamental portulaca (moss rose)?
This is the edible one. The name "portulaca" is widely used for two different plants: our product is Portulaca oleracea, the edible common purslane, a succulent green eaten as a vegetable. There is also Portulaca grandiflora, the ornamental "moss rose," a colorful garden flower grown for decoration - that is a different species and not what this is. To add to the confusion, common purslane is often treated as a garden weed even though it is edible, and it is sometimes called "pigweed" - but "pigweed" is also used for entirely different plants in the genus Amaranthus. Our product is specifically the edible Portulaca oleracea (aerial parts), and we label it clearly by botanical name so there is no confusion with the ornamental portulaca or with Amaranthus.
How do I use Purslane liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Purslane extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Purslane is a common edible plant, but it is naturally high in oxalates. If you are prone to kidney stones or have been advised to limit oxalates, use caution and talk with your healthcare provider first. If you are pregnant or nursing, take any medication, or have a medical condition, also consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Purslane (Portulaca Oleracea) Aerial Parts is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
