Frequently Asked Questions about Pyrrosia Extract
What is Pyrrosia (Pyrrosia lingua) leaf extract?
Pyrrosia is a liquid extract of the dried leaf (frond) of Pyrrosia lingua, a fern of the Polypodiaceae family. In traditional Chinese practice the leaf is known as Shi Wei (Folium Pyrrosiae); it was first recorded in the Shennong Ben Cao Jing around two thousand years ago. This tincture is cold-macerated in organic alcohol from leaf responsibly sourced from Taiwan and prepared in the USA. Please read the safety notes below carefully.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Pyrrosia leaf; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol, the classic cold-maceration method that yields a more concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
How is Pyrrosia different from your other ferns?
Pyrrosia (Shi Wei) is one of several ferns we offer, and they are all different plants. This one is Pyrrosia lingua. It is not Climbing Fern (Lygodium japonicum, known as Hai Jin Sha), not Maidenhair Fern (Adiantum capillus-veneris), and not Woolly Fern (Cibotium barometz). Each fern is a different genus, so we label each by its botanical name to keep them clear.
How do I use Pyrrosia leaf liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is about 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of juice or water, up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and because information on this herb is limited, it is best used under the guidance of a qualified practitioner. Read the safety information below before use.
Is Pyrrosia right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. If you have any urinary symptoms - such as painful or difficult urination, blood in the urine, a suspected urinary infection, or kidney or bladder stones - see a qualified doctor and do NOT try to self-treat, because these can be signs of a condition that needs medical care. Pyrrosia is traditionally a cooling, water-promoting (diuretic) herb, so use caution if you take a diuretic (water pill) medication, and do not use it for long periods without professional guidance. Do NOT use during pregnancy. If you are nursing, take any medication, or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Pyrrosia (Pyrrosia Lingua) Leaf is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
