Frequently Asked Questions about Quassia Extract
What is Quassia (Quassia amara)?
Quassia is a small tropical tree or shrub of the family Simaroubaceae, botanically Quassia amara, native to South and Central America. Its wood and bark are famous for being among the most bitter of all natural substances - the bitter principle is a compound called quassin. Because of this, its Spanish name is amargo, meaning "bitter," and in English it is also called bitter wood; other names include hombre grande. The part used here is the bark. Our extract is offered in two forms - an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture - each from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-bark liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product (it is not purified quassin), and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Quassia amara bark; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the bark's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.
Is this Quassia amara or Jamaican quassia, and is it the same as quassia wood chips?
Two clarifications. First, the species: there are two different trees sold as "quassia." Ours is Quassia amara, the South American species. There is also Picrasma excelsa, known as Jamaican quassia or bitter ash, which is a different tree in the same family. Our product is specifically Quassia amara. Second, the form: quassia is also sold as raw wood chips or shavings, which people use for things like homemade bitters and other traditional purposes; our product is different - it is a concentrated liquid extract of the bark that you take by the drop, not wood chips, and it is not purified quassin. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Quassia amara), plant part (bark) and format (liquid extract) so there is no confusion with the Jamaican species, with wood chips, or with the isolated compound.
How do I use Quassia liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 3 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Note that quassia is extremely bitter, so dilution is recommended. Drink the entire contents.
Is Quassia extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Quassia is not right for everyone. Do not use it during pregnancy. It is very bitter and concentrated, and large amounts can irritate the stomach or cause nausea, so do not exceed the suggested serving. With heavy or prolonged use it has been associated with effects on fertility, so use it only in moderation. If you are nursing, take any medication, or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Not for children. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
