Bombax ceiba, like other trees of the genus Bombax, is commonly known as Cotton tree. More specifically, it is sometimes known as Red silk-cotton; Red cotton tree; Silk-cotton or Kapok. This Asian tropical tree has a straight tall tree and its leaves are deciduous in winter. Red flowers with 5 petals appear in the spring before the new foliage. It produces a capsule which, when ripe, contains white fibres like cotton. Its trunk bears spikes to deter attacks by animals. Bombax ceiba grows to an average of 20 meters, with old trees up to 60 meters in wet tropical regions.*

Frequently Asked Questions about Red Cotton Tree Extract
What is Red Cotton Tree (Bombax ceiba) flower extract?
Red cotton tree is a liquid extract of the dried flower of Bombax ceiba, the red silk cotton tree of the Malvaceae family, known in Chinese as Mu Mian. You may see it under an older botanical name, Gossampinus malabarica (also Bombax malabaricum) - these are synonyms for the same tree, whose large, showy red flowers appear on the bare branches in late winter. In southern China the dried flowers are a well-loved food ingredient, used in floral teas (such as the Cantonese "five-flower tea") and in soups. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. Two things are worth knowing: this is Bombax ceiba, a different plant from kapok (Ceiba pentandra, the white silk cotton tree) and from ordinary cotton (Gossypium); and although the flower is a food, a concentrated extract is stronger than culinary use, so please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Bombax ceiba flower; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, giving it a milder, naturally sweet taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is the red cotton tree the same as kapok or cotton?
No - several "cotton" trees are easy to mix up, so it helps to be clear. This product is Bombax ceiba, the red silk cotton tree, whose Chinese name is Mu Mian; you may also see it written under the older synonyms Gossampinus malabarica or Bombax malabaricum. Kapok, or the white silk cotton tree, is a different plant, Ceiba pentandra - a related member of the mallow family grown for the fluffy fiber in its pods, not the same as our red-flowered tree. And ordinary cotton, the textile plant, is Gossypium, a different genus again. All three have cottony fibers, which is where the shared names come from, but they are different plants. We label ours clearly as Bombax ceiba (red cotton tree, Mu Mian), the flower, so it is not confused with kapok or with cotton.
How do I use Red Cotton Tree flower liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml), up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner, diluted in a little water, tea or juice. The alcohol-free glycerite has a milder, naturally sweet taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and remember that a concentrated extract is stronger than the flower used in cooking. Please read the safety information below before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Red Cotton Tree flower right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. The Mu Mian flower is enjoyed as a food in southern China and has a good safety record, but a few cautions are sensible for a concentrated extract. Allergy: the red cotton tree is in the Malvaceae (mallow) family, so avoid it if you are allergic or sensitive to mallow-family plants. Pregnancy and nursing: because a concentrated extract is stronger than culinary use, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Serious symptoms: do not use it to self-treat diarrhea, bleeding or any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Concentration: keep to the suggested serving and to short-term use. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
