Vaccaria (Vaccaria Hispanica) is an annual flowering plant that belongs to the Caryophyllaceae family and is native to Eurasia. The seeds of the plant are widely used in traditional Chinese medicine. The grey-green glabrous plant is about 30-70 cm tall. The leaves are simple with a cuneate or cordate base and entire margin. The flowers are waxy herbage, blue-grey, purple or light pink. Each flower has 5 petals and sepals. There are usually 10 stamens. As a rule, the fruit is dry and opens when it is mature. The seeds are about 2-2.5 mm across. *

What is Vaccaria / Wang Bu Liu Xing (Vaccaria hispanica) seed extract?

Vaccaria is a liquid extract of the dried seed of Vaccaria hispanica, a plant of the Caryophyllaceae family, commonly called cowherb or cow soapwort; the seed is known in traditional Chinese medicine as Wang Bu Liu Xing (Semen Vaccariae). This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. Two things are worth knowing up front: the seed has an important pregnancy caution (it can stimulate the uterus) and a note for anyone on blood-thinning medication, both explained in the safety section; and it should not be confused with Soapwort (Saponaria officinalis), a related plant in the same family, or with Chia (Salvia hispanica), which only shares the species word "hispanica."

What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?

Both are liquid extracts of the same Vaccaria hispanica seed; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The seed inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.

Is Vaccaria the same as Wang Bu Liu Xing, or as Soapwort?

Yes to the first, no to the second. Vaccaria and Wang Bu Liu Xing are the same thing - "Vaccaria" is the botanical name and "Wang Bu Liu Xing" is the traditional Chinese medicine name for the same seed (Vaccaria hispanica; you may also see the synonym Vaccaria segetalis or the Latin Semen Vaccariae). So a listing under either name is the same seed. Soapwort, however, is a different plant - Saponaria officinalis - which is in the same Caryophyllaceae family and is also rich in soap-like saponins, but it is a separate species and we sell it on its own. And Chia (Salvia hispanica) is unrelated, sharing only the word "hispanica." We label ours clearly as Vaccaria / Wang Bu Liu Xing (Vaccaria hispanica) seed.

How do I use Vaccaria liquid extract?

Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
