Woolly Fern (Cibotium Barometz) is an evergreen or perennial rhizomatous fern in the Dicksoniaceae family. It originates from China and Thailand. The stems can grow up to 1 m in height, when upright, but they are often procumbent and form colonies of plants in the forests or abandoned areas. The fronds can reach up to 3 m in height. They are clustered and 3 times pinnately compound. The leaflets are lanceolate with acute apexes and serrated margins. The sori are marginal and formed on the pinnules. The rhizomes are covered with golden-brown, woody, thick hairs. *

Important safety information - please read before use

Gou Ji is a fairly gentle herb in tradition, but a few specific cautions apply.

  • Pregnancy / nursing: do NOT use it during pregnancy, and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding.
  • Blood clotting: it has a mild effect on platelets (it may slightly reduce clotting), so if you take blood-thinning or anti-clotting medicines (such as warfarin or aspirin), have a bleeding or clotting disorder, or are due to have surgery, consult your practitioner first.
  • Traditional pattern: in traditional Chinese medicine it is a warming, drying herb and is avoided by people described as having "dryness" or heat signs - such as dry mouth, dark urine or a bitter taste - so it may not suit everyone.
  • Contains alcohol. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Woolly Fern Extract
What is Woolly Fern / Gou Ji (Cibotium barometz) rhizome extract?
Woolly fern is a liquid extract of the dried rhizome of Cibotium barometz, a tree fern of the Cibotiaceae family, known in traditional Chinese medicine as Gou Ji (or Jin Mao Gou Ji; Rhizoma Cibotii) and by colorful names such as golden chicken fern and Scythian lamb - the last from an old legend about a plant-animal. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. Two points are worth knowing: it has some specific safety cautions (pregnancy and a mild effect on blood clotting), covered below; and Cibotium barometz is a CITES-protected species, so it should only be bought from responsibly and sustainably sourced supply. It should not be confused with the other medicinal fern rhizomes such as Guan Zhong (Dryopteris crassirhizoma).
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Cibotium barometz rhizome; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The rhizome inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is Gou Ji the same as Guan Zhong or other medicinal ferns?
No - several ferns are used medicinally, so it helps to be clear. Ours is Cibotium barometz, Gou Ji (the golden chicken fern), and we use the rhizome. Guan Zhong is a different fern, Dryopteris crassirhizoma (which we list separately as Cyrtomium), also a rhizome but a distinct plant with a different traditional use. Male fern is yet another, Dryopteris filix-mas. So although they are all ferns and several use the rhizome, they are different plants. Ours, Cibotium barometz, is also notable for being a CITES-protected species and for its golden hairs (sometimes called golden moss). We label it clearly as woolly fern / Gou Ji (Cibotium barometz) rhizome.
How do I use Woolly Fern liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Because of the pregnancy and blood-thinner cautions below, please read the safety information before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Woolly Fern (Cibotium Barometz) Rhizome is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
